Slack in the fleet, self-contained line, low mileage accumulation, line with it's own depot that basically didn't do anything else - no wonder!

It was not really over-provision of Class 504s; when they replaced the older units, almost all Bury line services were worked by 4 coach formations; it was only in later years that 2 coach formations became normal, creating surplus 504s.

Chessington South branch? That’s only ever had electric, right from Day 1.

Think that's covered under the "most of the SR" head upthread :)
OTOH there are random SR inner suburban stations that have had timetabled diesel workings - Grove Park I think had a summer Hastings in demu days.

The surviving line on the Isle of Wight went from steam straight to 3rd rail electrification in 1966/7

Hadfield has had a DMU (Pacer) service from Manchester Victoria via Ashburys during a closure of Picc for engineering works some years ago. It squealed like a pig round Ashburys curve.
I remember around the late 80's / early 90's the Glossop / Hadfield service lost its Sunday service for a year or two. It was then resurrected for one year only with orange and brown liveried two-car GMPTE pacers instead of the usual Monday - Saturday EMUs. I used this once or twice from Glossop to Manchester Piccadilly and its route was stopping to Guide Bridge then fast to Stockport via Denton and Reddish South, reversing at Stockport and fast to Piccadilly. It was a good route if you enjoyed a bit of novelty! I think this must have coincided with some long term weekend engineering at Piccadilly but I couldn't be sure.

I don't think the North Clydeside Blue Train routes Milngavie/Balloch or the Airdrie line would have had scheduled diesels prior to electrification either? Certainly Oban line trains passing on certain sections would have been.

DMUs (and main line diesels on through Glasgow trains) must have operated to/through Ormskirk before electrification though?

Ive heard Milngavie has had 156s in service there.
Other ones are Neilston branch, not sure about the Maxwell park side of Cathcart Circle though.
What about Glasgow Central Low Level?

Local trains in South Manchester. Guessing Glossop/Hadfield line but also possibly stations on the line to Crewe e.g Alderley Edge?

The Alderley Edge terminators have already been mentioned, but last year it wasn't unknown for a Diesel to cover for an electric working a Liverpool - Crewe stopper.

Also I believe a few years ago before Bolton got wired up there used to be a Crewe - Bolton service in the morning peak.

But had 05001 for engineering, although dont know it was ever used to rescue a failed unit

The Swansea and Mumbles, the first passenger railway of all, was horse, steam and electric powered at various times of its life but never diesel.

Edit: forgot we were only looking for stations which still exist so this doesn't count.
