Absolutely not at the moment, when this is all over.

I can only see the options of changing at Birmingham, Euston and Green Park or going via Derby and St Pancras which has the advantage of reducing the number of changes to two but seems less direct somehow.

Is there any other way I might have missed. I can't believe there is, but maybe some sort of alternative via Paddington. I vaguely recall from my NRES days that there are direct services from BHM to PAD, but that was 19 years ago.

Waiting for HS2 to open is not an option :D

There is also the Euston option with a change at Tamworth. You may be able to get a significantly cheaper walk up fare as you avoid Avanti West Coast.

If you want to keep out of Central London what about the Reading option - with the direct coach service right outside the station. The route planning websites give the option of a destination as the Heathrow central bus station. Use a ticket splitting website for ideas about the cheapest advance fare.

In normal times there is the occasional direct service from Burton to Reading, otherwise one change needed at Birmingham New Street.

It can be done in as little as 2h 35min* via Tamworth

(* in practice you may prefer to avoid the Heathrow Express and of course you may get across London quicker than the minimum interchange times allow for):

There are various train booking sites that will identify if it's cheaper to split.

You can also specify via or avoid points if you have a preference; some sites even let you force a change at Tamworth if you wish. Let us know if you need any help with this.

No worries :)

The fastjp.com journey planner has a lot of features to tailor your journey, but it doesn't do fares, just times.

However some sites, including Trainsplit.com, use the same features, so once you have an idea of the itinerary you may want, you could use Trainsplit to look at prices.

I'd hold off buying any tickets at present though as timetables may be subject to change and we don't yet know when normal service will resume.

Make sure you are covered by travel insurance, and allow plenty of time if you are connecting to a plane (even consider staying overnight; the Premier Inn at Hayes & Harlington is very convenient and can be very affordable too)

Obviously a single change at St Pancras onto Piccadilly Line is simplest (especially if you have luggage)

If coming into Euston, Green Park is a very long walk between Piccadilly and Victoria lines (although riding escalator to ticket hall and back down to other line shortens walk). But an alternative is to get Hammersmith and City from Euston Square (to Paddington for Heathrow connect now known as TfL rail)

An interesting alternative is instead of continuing to Euston, change at Watford for a service via Clapham Junction. If you have timed it right can alight at West Brompton, then cross platform and get a District Line train one stop to Earls Court, where you can pick up the Piccadilly to Heathrow.
