Had my telephone interview this afternoon and unfortunately I won't be progressing any further as I don't have a driving licence, said all roles outside central London require a driving licence! So bear that in mind for anyone with an interview coming up!

I find that slightly puzzling, i live 30 min walking distance of the depot for NCL station and the station. How they can pop you out of the equation for something like that confuses me.

I was applying for NCL to, I've emailed the recruitment team about it but I doubt that will get me anywhere

Many TOC and FOC require a full driving license as you may have to travel home from the end of your shift at another location in a company vehicle.

So I absolutely fluffed my interview. Nerves just got the better of me and I was asked some questions that I hadn't even come across in the last couple of days of practice and revision I have been doing. It's funny, I've never struggled with an interview in my life, but I think the difference this time was that I actually want the job, so the stakes were high! Although it's a great shame and I can't help but feel disappointed in myself, as others have said on this thread, you win some, you lose some! Just look at it as a positive experience... it was great to actually have the opportunity to at least get to an interview with a TOC and now I know I need to be a lot more prepared next time! My interviewer was awesome though, you all have nothing to worry about, it felt like it was just a friendly chat.

For those asking though, I was told there was currently NO talent pool with LNER - all successful candidates will go straight into a training course in York. You are also asked at the start of the interview what depot you are applying for, and in my case, whether you are willing to relocate if successful.
Hi I have my telephone interview tomorrow feeling the nervs already so god knows how I will feel actually on the phone, can you shed some light on what questions they asked so I can try calm some nervs down? Or at least what type of questions they asked! Thanks

Had a phone interview.. 4 week turn around supposedly. Find these things devilishly difficult, much prefer p2p. I've already passed psychometrics elsewhere, hopefully progress to next stages.

I tried to rearrange mine but unfortunately I was unable to. The questions are as you expect them to be but I must have just been unlucky, I was asked some competency based questions that were not covered in any training or practice material I was practicing with.

This is the email I replied to when I didn't receive the prompt for my 3rd even though they did say in the email I'd receive it shortly. Shortly after I emailed them, I received the prompt to complete the test.

I’ve booked an interview slot for Tomrorow which has been confirmed. I’ve had a second email and message pop up on my profile that I need to book an interview slot. Has anyone else had this issue?

ive emailed them and heard nothing back. Don’t want to book a second interview slot for the sake of it.

You can click 'watch thread' at the top of the page to get alerts without posting, just for future reference.

I did the 3rd assessment on 23/3/20 and haven't had any reply so emailed them last night. Got an email back this morning saying that there was 1000's of applicants and that they would be back in touch shortly.

Hi

Hope you don't mind me replying to this.

Firstly, I'm sure that you probably did better than you think so don't beat yourself up about it.

Secondly, you say that you were asked competency based questions that hadn't come up when you were researching. I think therein lies the problem with competency based questions (in my opinion); people are too focussed trying to find out the exact question that is going to be chucked at them, and when it isnt, or it's worded differently, people tend to panic.

Just to offer a bit of advice to anyone who is following this thread, and it is only advice from my own point of view and experiences, you are better off researching what type of skills are needed to be a train driver and thinking about example answers based around those skills so that you have examples ready when the question comes at you. For example, the role of a driver is customer focussed role, so think of times when you've helped a customer out, or when you have went above and beyond to help someone out. Rather than thinking 'I must have a word perfect answer for the question 'Can you give me an example when you've went above and beyond to help a customer?' ' I think essentially what I'm saying is that the wording of questions tends to throw a lot of people, but essentially they are the same question.

For example, I had my telephone interview yesterday and in preparation I thought of examples for all of the following skills:
Customer service, attention to detail, concentration, systematic approach, positive attitude towards rules and procedures, assertiveness, teamwork, decision making, diagnosing problems, cooperation, multitasking, prioritising and organisation. This way, I knew had examples covered for a wide range of skills that they could ask, rather than thinking about the exact question.

I'm not saying this is the best way to do it, and I'm certainly not preaching, I'm just offering some advice as I've seen a few people on various threads stressing about this type of thing, and it works for me. It may not work for me this time, but I felt relaxed whilst doing the interview.

By the way Ludus, this is by no means a criticism of you, in any shape or form. Everyone who has come this far, have some confidence in yourselves as you've already beaten thousands of hopefuls to get to this stage. You know your stuff, just try to relax and enjoy it.

And before anyone asks, NO, I won't tell you what the questions were.

Well worded reply.
Also when your speaking on the phone try to relax, I got caught up in the nerves personally and that's the only thing I wish I had more control over.
The interviewers are nice people (well at least the one I spoke with was) and seem to be able to pull any additional info out of you if you seem to stumble a bit.
Just relax and be yourself

I had my interview this afternoon. It wasn't so bad. The interviewer was very good at putting you at ease. The attributes of a driver are worth knowing and relating to. Use the STAR method to structure your responses. I am quite pleased with how it went. Whether it's enough will show in 4 weeks. It was over in 20 mins because she didn't have to prompt and I stuck to the STAR method. Good luck and breathe

Apologies if this has already been answered but what does “successful candidates are likely to be offered the role as an apprenticeship opportunity” mean? Is there a difference between that and a usual trainee driver role?

No difference really. It just formalises and standardises training across TOCs.

Apprenticeships can attract government funding

Anyone who has had the telephone interview already get told about the next process etc? And if you got asked which depot you would like to work at?
They were in too much of a rush to explain the next process and apologised for that but he did query my preferred location. This reminded me of the MMI only a lot shorter. Said to expect an email within 4 weeks saying what is next in the process. I have enhanced pass for both parts so fingers crossed that means I could get straight through to DMI... got to the DMI for Arriva not that long ago and tripped on one question... felt tough falling at that stage of the process but looking from the outside this TOC looks the business!

I have been googling with no luck... can anyone tell me the salary and when it goes up. For example I know Arriva London training salary is approx 29k but goes up to 43k after approx 9 months and then approx a year later you finally move to the full salary of 62k... is there something similar at LNER?
