Well then I don't know what the answer is, some people still choose / need to use cash. You either subsidise all services so that they are free, or you exclude those people from travelling, which would not be good because those people might rely on public transport.

Use a fare box, any tin issued to a driver with a slot in will do, no change given, not emptied for three days after use, safe.

Rainham-based Swallow Coaches, who operated a couple of service routes in Essex, have ceased trading today citing the Coronavirus.

"It is with great sadness that I am to advise you that the Swallow Coach Company will be passed to administrators after the close of business on Tuesday 31st March, 2020.

The last day of operation on our contracted services 13, 61 and 133 will be the same date. For updates on these routes please contact Essex County Council Passenger Transport Team.

This decision was not taken lightly, however given the current situation with Coronavirus and the renewal of our insurances due on 1st April, we feel that the decision to cease trading has been made for us."

Even if things only stay this bad for 2/3 months which is really optimistic in itself, I feel that we will still be seeing the effects of everything in 18/24 months' time. The government will have a tough job to work out just how much money will need to be put into the bus industry just to start the rebuilding process. I'm 25 and I've never seen anything anywhere near as bad as this and I doubt I ever will again. It doesn't help that companies will still need to prepare for LEZ requirements too so if a lot of companies don't go bust I will be surprised. Town centres and shopping centres along with schools/colleges/universities will require time to rebuild too so it will be a while for passenger numbers to build up to pre-coronavirus levels and even then they were generally in the decline anyway.

Had an email from Megabus to say they're suspending all services in England and Wales from Sunday.

I’ve also just had an email saying that Megabus services are being withdrawn from the 5th of April, surely it’s only a matter of time before National Express do the same?

Wonder if they were running empty ?

Last week they were offering Birmingham to Dundee for £11

Quite possibly.

I'm a fan, but my guess is must people who need to travel at the moment also need to travel fast.

The remaining skeleton service on the National Express coach network will be withdrawn from 2359 on Sunday, April 5 with no late evening or overnight services that day.

Something will be kept. http://www.passengertransport.co.uk/2020/04/national-express-to-suspend-coach-services/

National Express will fully suspend its national network of scheduled coach services with effect from midnight Sunday, April 5.

Chris Hardy, managing director of National Express UK Coach: “We kept a limited coach network running to be able to help those individuals with essential travel needs but it is no longer viable to continue to do this.

The decision to temporarily suspend all services is the right one based on the current unprecedented circumstances and I hope our passengers understand this

“Passenger numbers continue to fall as the public rightly follow government advice to avoid non-essential travel. The decision to temporarily suspend all services is the right one based on the current unprecedented circumstances and I hope our passengers understand this.

“It is very clear that the critical thing we must do to protect our NHS and save lives is to stay at home. All journeys before [Monday] will be completed and we will ensure customers are not stranded but until further notice, we will not be running any services.”

Passengers who had travel booked can choose to hold the ticket and amend for future travel within the next 12 months, free of charge, regardless of the terms and conditions. Customers do not need to make contact until they wish to rebook.

For passengers who do not want this option, a full refund will be issued for cancelled services in line with terms and conditions.

Our drivers, customer service teams, customer contact centre and the wider National Express team have been working incredibly hard to keep our services running safely and we thank them for their efforts

Hardy added: “Our drivers, customer service teams, customer contact centre and the wider National Express team have been working incredibly hard to keep our services running safely and we thank them for their efforts. We are speaking to them about what this means and will continue to do all we can to support everyone who works in our business at this challenging time.

“We know this is a worrying time. We take the welfare of our customers and employees extremely seriously and will continue to take guidance from the Government to ensure we do everything we sensibly can to keep them safe.

“Regular updates will be provided through our website, social media channels and email alerts.

“When the time is right, we look forward to resuming services and welcoming customers back on board.”

Government support for the bus industry in England announced

The government will cover the losses of bus companies in England over the next three months to ensure that services can still run.

The UK's bus industry says passenger numbers have "fallen off a cliff" since the government advised people against all non-essential travel.

That caused bus firms to cut services.

But a new £167m fund will ensure that bus companies can cover their costs on essential services so that key workers, like NHS staff, can get to work.

Hundreds of millions
Similar agreements are already in place in Scotland and Wales. The deal in Wales includes free bus travel for NHS workers.

Hundreds of millions of pounds of support measures from local and central government have been dedicated to the UK's bus industry to ensure that companies can survive through the coronavirus crisis and keep a reduced bus network moving.

The latest figures from the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT), which represents bus and coach companies in Britain, showed that passenger numbers were down by 75%, although the numbers are now thought to be worse than that.

Empty busses
With people advised to stay at home, many buses around the UK are being driven around with no passengers on them at all.

CPT boss Graham Vidler said the funding would "plug the gap" between the costs of running essential routes and the income received by companies. He said that would allow "critical journeys to continue".

Government support is conditional on bus companies operating about half of their routes.

Operators have also pledged not to let buses carry more than 50% of their maximum capacity to ensure that social distancing is possible onboard.

The Transport Secretary Grant Shapps emphasised that people should "stay at home if possible". However, he described buses as a "lifeline for people who need to travel for work or to buy food".

Image captionGrant Shapps described busses as a "lifeline" for those who need to make essential trips
"It's absolutely vital we do all we can to keep the sector running," he said.

Bus companies aim to temporarily lay off around half their staff who will then receive income under the government's coronavirus job retention scheme.

Before the coronavirus outbreak the government had earmarked funding to reopen bus routes which had been cut in recent years. Some of that money is now being spent on keeping existing routes running.

Any losses incurred by bus companies since the government advised people against all but essential travel should be covered under the rescue package.

It is definitely a brutal time to run a bus company of any size and fair play to any small operator that finds a way to survive through it. I think if we can get through the worst of this before the end of Summer passenger numbers could build back up reasonably quickly but if it goes on to at least September/October then with less money in peoples' pockets then it could be a tough year for everyone. The key is with shops more than anything. It seems pretty clear universities, colleges, etc won't be open to anyone before the end of this term so it's August/September at the earliest for them. The only chances of things being decent again are if we have things we get some of the summer as normal with no restrictions so travel numbers to beaches/parks/shops etc carry bus companies forward a bit. I would expect some service cuts nationwide too with how much money is being lost on a weekly basis. They'd need to cover that somehow. This situation clearing before the end of summer would be very optimistic too.

I wonder if the latest government announcement will mean that routes which have had drastic frequency cuts over the last two to three weeks will have improved frequencies soon

I think even the limited routes run for key workers are operating at horrific losses, so the government scheme would likely prop them up financially.

There might be an argument to rework bus networks so that they are reduced to those which directly match the workplaces and shift patterns of key workers and nothing else.

Every 80 minutes has to be one of the most bizarre frequencies I’ve ever seen.
I’m not surprised that the 600 is gone though.

You get that on single-vehicle operations where the route length precludes hourly. The Ormskirk-Preston train service, when it was a single-unit shuttle, used to operate approximately every 75 minutes.

It's every 45/50 minutes I find more bizarre. Overall those would be best reduced to clockface hourly with longer layovers - more reliable and easier to remember.

The 1C first operate in Glasgow has ended up with a 25 min layover at the Drumchapel end of things with it hourly now with the current situation and tbh it's generally quite reliable in normal circumstances with less layover time

Transdev continues to cut frequencies. From this Sunday a significant number of routes will see approximately half the normal frequency (60, 62, 67, K routes in Keighley, B2, B3 are hourly combined).

On the 62, which is largely 2 hourly there's one gap of 3h15.

https://www.transdevbus.co.uk/keighley/were-running-fewer-sunday-journeys-5-april-1

The X43 is withdrawn between Burnley and Skipton on a Sunday.

Oddly, the M4 has 2 more journeys than usual on a Sunday.

I think some are trying to do that. It's a very awkward time for bus operators as they do want to keep running key worker trips, but they are usually at the very start and end of the day, making the overall day longer. This is why we are seeing some odd frequencies during the day to help keep the PVR down

My local bus company, Metrobus, has decided to change its timetables even further from tomorrow.

Routes 21 from Crawley to Epsom, 22 Crawley to Holmbury St Mary, 84 Crawley to East Grinstead, 273 Crawley to Brighton, 281 Crawley to Lingfield and 318 Epsom to Banstead are being withdrawn until further notice. I suspect that is because nobody, not even essential workers, have used these routes over the past few days.
