How long can you have a break of journey for?

Hi there! Quick question about break of journey.

So I have plans in future to go to Dover from St Pancras. If I had an off-peak ticket which allowed me to have a BoJ, and I intended to have a BoJ at Rochester for an hour or two just to explore a bit before finishing my journey at Dover, would that be okay?

If not, how long can I have a BoJ for, or what reasons can I have a BoJ?

Unless your ticket is for a spercific service that is "named" by time then you can have a "BoJ" for as long as you like as long as the date on the ticket is valid.
You could for instance use the ticket to go off peak from A to B in the morning off peak then B to C in the evening off peak hours as no actual time of day is given. a 2hour break could not even be tracked, however getting into and out of the station barriers might be a problem, but travel validity wise its no problem at all

Any period within the validity of the ticket.

So, for example, if this is the return portion of an Off Peak Return (SVR) it would be up to a calendar month!

You can also break it as many times as you like. Many staff make up their own rules about BOJ sadly, and don't believe this to be the case.

A quick question merits a quick answer. Your ticket is Off Peak so you can break you journey for as long as you like, as many times as you like along your chosen route via Rochester until it expires.

Don't some tickets prohibit break of journey on the outward leg?

However take a little bit of care how long you break it for as the "peak" may catch up on you by the time you finally arrive in St Pancras.

Yes, quite a lot of them do, it's via the restriction code in most cases.

A few also prohibit it on the return leg (code 8A) but there aren't many of them left.
I think TfW still have some 8A restrictions on the North Wales Coast?

Llandudno to Liverpool off peak day return forbids a break of journey at Chester, even though you have to change trains. I think it is because there are no off peak day returns between Llandudno and Chester making it possibly cheaper to buy a day return to Liverpool than Chester!

I wonder what percentage of the travelling public know what ‘8A’ printed on the ticket means!

This ridiculous fare anomaly may have removed since TfW fares restructure in January 2020?

It doesn't. The ticket has no BoJ restriction in either direction.

The Off Peak (period) return does, that's one of the remaining 8As.

8A Off Peaks are a bit odd, they are basically Anytimes but with the shorter outbound validity and no break of journey on either leg. They are progressively being replaced by Anytime Short Returns and the likes (one day out, one month back) because the concern is people using them like season tickets.

I must have got my day and period returns mixed up!

So on a day return from Liverpool I can legally go for a pint at Chester en-route home, but on a period return I can’t!

What chance have the public and staff got!
