Oh, got to do a parkrun on the Saturday morning as well, the more remote the better, thinking Thurso, Alness or Lands End.
If you do end up at a Scottish run just remember we have the more leisurely 9.30am start :)
And enjoy your trip - I’m sure wherever you go it’ll be great.

Strip down in the toilet on the train for a wash and a change of smalls. Trying to find hot water was always a challenge!

Remember trying to wash my hair in a MK3 toilet after my 6th overnight, tricky trying to do the footpress for the water to get it in a small cup to put over head without getting it all over the place.

Back in the 80s a hotel option for an overnight would have been expensive and a waste of a good move, nowadays a hotel is a given for me lol.

The first time I went out spotting it was the first unit I saw. I don’t really take down numbers now but that one unit has always stuck with me for some reason.

They are both in service and in Waverley right now.

I'm surprised they are running at the moment with the reduced timetable caused by the CV.

But good to know they are still floating around, always a highlight of a Central Scotland rover to do a Fife 68

They may not be the normal diagrams but they ARE fife circle services. BTP and ScotRail staff were barriering the trains at Waverley to stop the spotters.

They are two late night extras from waverley to inverkeithing so that makes them far from fife circle services these are extra trains running for key workers.
The btp and scotrail staff are there to stop bashers boarding as they for key workers only.

Slightly random, surely at 9pm Scotrail have spare 158/170s they could use instead, which would make life easier for the staff due to no slam doors. Unless it's part of the contract with DRS. No need for BTP as a pair of 170s won't bring out the foolish bashers ignoring the instructions. Although unless the BTP/staff remain on board, whats to stop said person from boarding at South Gyle?

Unless loadings that time of night merit 6 coaches

They weren't going to be used at all, however ScotRail are paying for them so might as well use them was the response I got last night.

Both of those links show the services going around the circle. The Fife Circle is the route not the train services!

Ok fair enough i didn't look at the link properly i assumed they there were just going to inverkeithing but they are extra services not the original service running to a different diagram.

Correct, one going clockwise and one anti clockwise terminating at Inverkeithing on the way back towards Edinburgh. They were only put in the system at 3pmish yesterday evening.

Back in the 80s a hotel option for an overnight would have been expensive and a waste of a good move, nowadays a hotel is a given for me lol.

I use B&B nowadays too because 1) I’m getting too old to do continuous overnights and 2) there are so few overnight trains nowadays. Back in the 80s (when an all line was reasonably priced) I would do 6 consecutive overnights on an all line. Back then places like Glasgow Central, Inverness and Waverley had showers for 50p-70p a time. On day 3 or 4, I would return home to Bristol on the evening, swap over clothes, have a shower and come back out for 1S19 up to Scotland.

Nowadays I don’t ever do an all line because it’s just too expensive. Doing advances to/from an area then doing one of the larger regional rovers (or even 2 adjoining ones) is much better value. If you’re in B&Bs the 0900 start or whatever isn’t an issue, and you’re not continually knackered. You also extend the holiday to 9 days if on a 7 day rover, 10 if a 8/15.

Ps I have even spent one day on a preserved line in the middle of a 8/15 making it into a 11 day holiday.

- The 17:16?? from Cardiff to Holyhead (or at least to Chester) in First Class. You get a three course meal for the reasonable upgrade price of £20 or £25, and it's cooked fresh in a kitchen just a few feet away from you.
- The Fort Bill sleeper and then possibly the Jacobite to Mallaig. When I did this last summer, I then got the ferry to the Isle of Skye, spent a while there, then the coach to Kyle of Lochalsh and the train from there to Inverness which I'd fully recommend!
Can you upgrade on an Explore Wales ticket? I bought one in February whilst the 37 was on the go and bought an advance first class to Holyhead for £66 as didn’t think you could upgrade with it.
Didn’t matter anyway as got a delicious 3 course meal and a full refund after the train failed at Chester!

I’ve done it once, albeit a year or two ago. Really can’t see why they would forbid it.

Although IIRC you’re only meant to be able to upgrade onboard now to avoid disappointment?

Unless I'm misreading completely, a 14 day All Line Rover is £1250 first class adult, whereas the equivalent Interrail for all 33 countries is £530 (€590) even without the current reduction of €59. That's a bonkers difference.
No Brainer!!.....especially when you get outbound/inbound travel in your country of residence.

Carry your swimming trunks in future and find a pool or a dip in the sea.
I used to do that in Ireland when I was camping out. Mallow was a good spot, a short walk from the station and I would pitch up on the banks of the river Blackwater. I didn't mind sharing the river with the otters... It's still the only place I have seen otters in the wild. Taking a dip at 0500 before catching the first Cork-Heuston meant swimming trunks were not required.
