Shearsby was the hunting ground of Jane Ball, who (working with her husband John) was one of the few female highwaymen recorded in English history. Another was Katherine Ferrers, a lady of aristocratic origin, who worked the Hertfordshire area and was reputedly shot at Wheathampstead.

The Parsonage Colliery in Leigh had the deepest coal mine shaft in Lancashire and, at 1000 yards, probably in the north of England*. The deepest in Wales is stated to have been Llay Main at Wrexham, at about 1250 yards.

* Further research suggests Wolstanton Colliery at Newcastle under Lyme was deeper.

The Seven Wonders of Wales is a traditional list of notable landmarks in north Wales, commemorated in an anonymously written rhyme:

"Pistyll Rhaeadr and Wrexham steeple,
Snowdon's mountain without its people,
Overton yew trees, St Winefride's well,
Llangollen bridge and Gresford bells."

Pistyll Rhaeadr is a waterfall, falling 240 ft in three stages, and can be found near Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Powys.

William Morgan was vicar of Llanrhaedr-ym-Mochnant when he made the first translation of the Bible into Welsh, published in 1588. He later was made Bishop of St Asaph, where he died in 1604.

Edwinstowe is near the Major Oak of Robin Hood fame in Sherwood Forest. Llangernyw has an ancient yew tree, supposed to be the oldest in Britain.
