Hi all and happy new year,

Does anyone know of the plans or timeline for the Liverpool street remodelling for platforms 15-18? I assume this will lead to a closure of Liverpool street or at least the east side of the station? and a blockade?

I assume this will have to happen during 2018 - but when?

The earliest work could commence is after the Shenfield services start using the Crossrail tunnels and the lower level at Liverpool Street from May 2019. There isn't anywhere else for the existing services to go until then.

I thought that Crossrail services on the GEML were being upgraded to 10-coaches this December?

Has there recently been some progress on this? I saw that there was going to be reduced overnight service on TfL Rail for a few months over Summer, and wondered if it was related.

The changes to late evening services between Liverpool St and Shenfield from next week are due to the Network Rail High Output Track Relaying kit making an appearance. Most of the Liverpool St work is currently scheduled for next year.

Wasn't there also talk of putting in a platform "0" to the West of platform 1, plus one or two platforms in between the current platforms 10 and 11?

Platform 0

Was there space available without bull dozing the shops? I imagine that would result in a major income fall if they receive the rent from those outlets.

Just checked and it was an option given in the 2016 Anglia Route Study. I'd imagine that's way off now in any case.

Talk, yes. Any drawings, no. Expensive, yes. Useful, no.

Am I right in assuming that the new lengthened platforms 16 and 17 will only fit a 9 car 345 and not a 10 car 720 or 12 car 745?

That‘s correct. They just about take a 9 car 345, which can only be achieved by the loss of platform 18.

If it was easy to make them 250m long, they would be, but it would require major demolition.

What can they do at Christmas? I thought nothing could happen until the trains are running through the core?

I think the interesting point is how long 3 platforms will be out of action and can the working timetable support that until the 2 remodelled ones are back.

3 platforms will only ever be out of action during the possessions, ie when trains aren’t running. And yes the timetable will support the service with the platforms available.

Transport for London (TfL) works to lengthen platforms 16 and 17 at Liverpool Street will begin over the Christmas period to make more platforms available for the new, longer Elizabeth line trains

There are 2 parts to this process, the physical changes, and introducing the longer trains.

You would expect the track to be altered and the platform walls to be installed during the closure, but doesn’t mean they have to fully surface the platform extensions, unless the trains are being lengthened at same time (I‘m not sure when trains are being done)

I used Liverpool Street in late 1980s, early 1990s and nearly always one platform closed for many weeks at a time whilst they rebuilt station, moved platforms 6-10 and tiled platforms with the grey/white tiles, there was even a period where the old concourse (about 4 car lengths from current gate line) of platforms 1-6 was removed and had to walk along the part built platforms, with some bits surfaced in temporary plywood boards until the tiles were laid.

At one time in 1980s were going to increase to 22 platforms and increase from 6 to 8 tracks from Bethnal Green (before plans got cut back to save money)

They probably reasoned it was better to add 2 new tracks from Stratford, with 2 platforms underground? Taking 40 years though...

TFL website engineering work shows engineering work between 25th December - 28th December, and again from 1st January - 3rd January...

Greater Anglia details only go as far as mid-October.

Assume these could be pushed back now Crossrail is delayed again?

Crossrail's opening is delayed, it doesn't mean some of the works planned for Crossrail can be delayed, especially at just four months notice before they're due to occur.

IIRC some of those works are also for the long-awaited renewal of the old 1940s/1950s era OLE in the Stratford area. Last bastion of GE compound fixed-tension equipment on the GEML as I understand it.
