How much work is being done on them apart from repainting?
Probably very little as the conversion work & other heavy stuff was undertaken by Progress Rail (EMD) at Longport.

What was done at Longport?
A thorough mechanical overhaul in including engine and bogies, fitment of UK Safety systems including UK Style BMAC lights & relocation of the Horns, and a redesign of the air dam. I noticed that the fuel tank has had a UK type filler cap added as well. I believe the cab air con modules were removed before entering the UK.
not sure if it's been confirmed before but it's in the new livery.

I have been interested in Trains for over 50 years and following the demise of Fotopic I am slowly putting back some of my photos on here. In the meantime, a big thank you to all those that regularly post gen and please feel free to leave any comments if you wish.sisuktrainpix.smugmug.com
66793 - 66797 have appeared in the GBRf MBDL pool on TOPS, so they appear to be planning for five to be coming from somewhere...I've heard a rumor of GBRf acquiring some more 66's from Europe (Germany?). Does anyone know any more details?

They're not currently short, it's more a move looking ahead to increased work they anticipate needing to resource in the future, particularly HS2 contracts. How come they are short? I assumed the collapse of coal haulage would have left spare traction??
The MBDL pool is not a GBRf pool.66793 - 66797 have appeared in the GBRf MBDL pool on TOPS, so they appear to be planning for five to be coming from somewhere...
Unless things have changed, no modern high powered diesel freight loco, with its exhaust scrubbers etc, can fit within the UK loading gauge. How come they are short? I assumed the collapse of coal haulage would have left spare traction??
The 66’s weren’t very fuel efficient as I understand it....but does the lack of latest fuel inefficient scrubbing malarkey mean that they relatively aren't that bad now?Unless things have changed, no modern high powered diesel freight loco, with its exhaust scrubbers etc, can fit within the UK loading gauge.
Grandfather rights enable UK freight companies to buy secondhand 66s etc. As European railways buy newer locos, expect to see more of this until the impasse is solved.
Reported as five from Germany with two of them being heavy haul variants, due over here fairly soon but, obviously, won't be available for some months
Might be ready sooner than the other three. These latest five apparently do not have so many variations from their UK cousins, air-conditioning kit on the roof not there. Apparently they are from the same batch as other 66s that came straight to the UK. The (two ?) lower geared ones were apparently converted from standard ratio so perhaps the original gears are available for reinstatement. That is assuming GBRF would prefer them as standard ratio.
Yes, because they are mounted on the roof, so come the first low bridge they would be removed anyway.Wait...
Just to let me check that I read this right...
Swedish locos get sold to the UK. The UK, on average, has a slightly warmer/milder climate than Sweden. And then in the UK they _remove_ the cab airconditioners?
Yep. Its a loading gauge issue. As that's not a problem in continental europe, many have Air Con fitted, such as the latter ones classified as 77 in places like France.Wait...

Yes, they are.Clearances are THAT low in the UK?
