More of a overall general observation as opposed to the current remodelling going on but after today's disruption caused by a broken down freight train at Bedford, large delays occurred.

This was captured at 23:40 and shows many trains in the vicinity of Leicester station. I'm no expert but I couldn't help feeling an extra platform or two couldn't go amiss for any terminators as well as redoubling from Wigston Jn to Syston Jn.

Your thoughts?

The problem there doesn't seem to be a lack of platform capacity, but rather the need to stable units in both 'loop' platforms overnight which limits the options.
Not to be pedantic but the rescue loco was sent from somewhere else which ran as 1Z98. It then dragged the failed freight to Leicester/Humberstone Road sidings for 1Z99 to take over from there.

Getting a bit off topic now so I’ll leave it at that.
Further off-topic pedantry, but it's very wrong for a light loco going to clear the line to run as 1Z98! It should've been 1Z99, as the Rule Book requires. Perhaps the loco at Humberstone Road was originally intended to go and rescue the failure itself, but that doesn't change anything in that respect.

Agree it sounds wrong, 1Z99 seems like it was deployed first but had to come from Crewe, then 1Z98 first described as 0Z98 left Mountsorrel but later described in reports as 1Z98...

Work resumes from tomorrow night and into Sunday. It’ll be interesting to see what Network Rail will be able to achieve during this period.

Having a valid reason to travel, I looked at the progress this afternoon, but there aren't any better angles for photography than those already taken. I'll also be there on Sunday on my return journey so I'll see what I can see from platform 3.

@civ-eng-jim I'm no expert and apologies if incorrect but from what you've said, will the old connection from platform 1 onto the down fast be removed this weekend as well as 'finishing' the connection up to the existing up and down goods or will that require further possessions? I assume it'll either be one or the other, rather than completing both connections at the same time.

Of course a connection to the down fast will need to be provided at all times for the week ahead beyond the possession.

Thanks.

Yep - The turnout connection between Platform 1 and Down fast is coming out (as you correctly labelled a few posts back) and all the connecting up bits will be done too. Might not be welded...although only the Down Fast is to be welded track.

So if anyone's down there, they should see about 14 track panels going in - Swain Street Bridge would be a good viewing position.

Don't forget it's in lockdown

Other than some shops being shut life seems to be going on as normal in this part of the lockdown.

Some of us have valid reasons for travel.
Everyone in Leicester has a valid reason for travel - namely that it's lawful, full stop, whether in or out of the city, whether resident there or elsewhere, and whether stopping off in Leicester or just passing through.

Asking about the reason for travel entails going beyond what the railway/police are entitled to demand given the current Regulations.

Back on topic, several engineers trains are now in place at Leicester as the possession is now in place. The old Fox Street loco shunt head has now been removed and is marked as 'GONE' on signaling maps.

At 09:15 - little to report. Work is being done preparing the trackbed for the connection to be made.
The Fox St siding is still very overgrown and physically there.
Covid Testing station is still there and busy according to the NHS staff; I didn't want to push my luck and ask to get closer to the end of Plat 1 !
Another report (hopefully with fots) later today.

I find the new points are painted on the sides, is this the future trend on the network? When l travelled in Italy in 2014 l found the tracks in the country are all painted which look very special than other countries.
These are the old points. They’re painted white to prevent them expanding during high temperatures caused by hot weather.

Arriving by RRB today I was able to hold my phone aloft to take this. I was not accosted and didn't linger.

It'll be interesting to see the new layout in action once all engineers trains and equipment is out the way. Do any alterations to signal LR413 need to be done to it?

This morning I decided to take some exercise on my bicycle and found myself in the vicinity of Leicester Station.

Only a handful of staff present so I approached the Site Manager wearing his orange action man kit (staying 2m away from him)

Without any further hesitation allowed me to take photos

I hope these photos show what has been achieved (so far) and I will try to give further updates as they happen.

Does it look as if the platform track been adjusted to ease the curvature at all?

...and thanks for the photos.
