I have three 2-night breaks booked between now and the end of August, Backpool, Carlisle and Morecambe, and am toying with the idea of a one-nighter to Weymouth later this week, having read the post above which reminded me how nice it is there. Although that would mean using TfW between Hereford and Newport, which I have deliberately avoided on my other arrangements (not all starting from Hereford). Trying to do my bit to keep the small hotel businesses going.

There is discussion on another thread that the Welsh government may stop discriminating against people who have to use public transport in the near future:

Booked it. Ensuite room 200 metres from the station for £38 and check-in from midday, booked return train departing 13:11 so I can have over 24 hours in the resort, total cost £84 including travel. You could pay that for just a hotel room. and I won't have much to carry around after checking out as it's just one night.

TfW will just have to wind their necks in! I really feel life is getting back to something approaching normal now, and my sanity is returning.

Make sure you obtain reservations (where possible) and an itinerary.

I'd also book with a retailer who will be prepared to back you up in the event of a dispute.

While it's not necessarily my place to endorse a particular retailer, we have the owners of Trainsplit and Assertis (Ticket Clever) on here, so it may be worth booking with Trainsplit or Ticket Clever as I know they would support anyone who was denied legitimate travel who held an itinerary if the company refused to resolve the matter to your satisfaction; I am happy to facilitate contact with the owners of these companies if anyone is in such a position.

(If any other retailers are on here, and able to support forum members in this way, I'd be happy to give you a mention too; just get in touch!)

I did book through Trainsplit, but wasn't able to get any reservations. Seems to be TfW's general policy now, no Advances and no reservations. Could our Trainsplit insider get me reservations if I said which services I intend to travel on? There's no reservations between Westbury and Weymouth anyway, but HFD-NWP and NWP-WSB would be useful to have.

The Newport - Westbury part of the journey, would be on the GWR Cardiff - Portsmouth, service, now served by the 165/166 and no seat reservations.

That is not quite correct; before Coronavirus and the amended timetable, seat reservations were available on those services and were becoming more reliable again.

However, under the amended timetable there are no seat reservations on ANY GWR service on ANY route.

Morning! Today’s the day. On checking my itinerary I see it has me changing at Newport and Westbury, although the train I change onto at Westbury also stops at Bristol Temple Meads. I have an Off Peak Return (departs Hereford at 0710, which surprised me being Off Peak but presumably okay). Would there be any advantage to changing at BRI instead of WSB?

The advantage is that the Weymouth train has 12 minutes at BRI so you can board at leisure and possibly have better choice of seat. On the other hand WSB will be more straightforward.

Thanks, just at BRI now and decided to stay put.

edit: realised I had plenty of time to collect my stuff and jump off so back to plan A.
