moderator note posts #1-#11 originally in this thread

Whereas spoons Malts are as good as any, their Fish and Chips would be a "Brake Brothers or Booker Special"

I always prefer fish and chips out a chippy.

Indeed. No restaurant, however posh, does it better than an actual chippy. I wonder if any other country's national dish is like that, where the best form of it is one obtained relatively cheaply in a definitely-not-classy establishment?

It's the same for a fry-up - the best ones are obtained from ramshackle greasy transport cafes, though there are increasingly few of them.

I’m not sure you can describe fish and chips as cheap anymore? It costs over £10 now near me.

How much is it at that Rick Stein gaff in Cornwall ?

A pony ?
I ate at Rick Steins in Marlborough a few years ago. I didn't have cod and chips, I had some kind of fish curry.
Can honestly say it was in the top 3 meals I've ever eaten.

Come on. You'll be lucky to get a bag of chips for that price in most places. What is it, a battered crab stick? :D

Proper fish and chips, and enough chips that even i am unable to finish them. North Birmingham had a fish and chips price war in the 80s and prices have not really gone up a huge amount (relatively) since then. Got to have at least one benefit of living in this dump eh?

Cash only presumably?;)

Even then, I don't see how that is possible or sustainable.

My nearest one was £5.60 for a supper iirc, and I can distinctly remember it being £4.50 about 10 years ago.

If anyone decides to go off-topic on this thread, I hope the mods will respond the customary reply:

"What's that got to do with the price of fish ?"

My old favourite in Nottingham was £5.50 for a regular - very filling and the chips were lovely! Down South (London & Rye) Fish seems to be more expensive however, looking at £5-8 for the fish alone!

I would argue that is likely the same everywhere - since the "national dish" usually starts off as the food of the people.

I'm quite shocked to hear how high some of the prices are on here!

Where I live it's always around 5 quid, with some rising to about 7 at the highest.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
About £6.50 around SW London for a small cod and chips. In recent years I've rediscovered the joys of fish suppers at various points along the Clyde... I'm totally sold :E

My local chippy.

£4.80 at lunch for fish, chips and a 'moist' as Peter Kay once called it (Peas or curry sauce).

£6.55 any other time for fish and chips. However one portion of chips is enough for two.

My local chippy in the Manchester area charges £4.20 for fish (cod / hake / plaice etc.) and £1.90 for chips.

I feel quite ashamed, i passed the chippy earlier just to check the price (to be honest i seldom do), its gone up to 3.20. I assume its been that for quite some time and i just haven't noticed.

Still can't believe some of the prices you lot pay down saarf, ain't you closer to the sea as well?

The sea surrounds this little island. Someone in Blackpool would be nearer than someone in Watford lol

Even so that’s remarkably cheap! Would have been a good 10-20 years ago in many places since they’ve been that price!

I suppose it depends on how far you are from the centre of the country, surely the further from the sea, the higher the cost?

Don't think it matters now really as a large number of chippies will be using Icelandic frozen product. It wouldn't surprise me if they still used the excuse to justify a high price though!
