What's the grinding sound on 755s?

I ride Greater Anglia 755s every week. They make a grinding sound from time to time. It sounds like disc brakes but happens with the engine power on or when coasting. What is it? My guess is an axle being braked to test for wheel slide.

Its a wheel scrubber that periodically applies to the driven wheels to try and clean them of any contamination.

I hadn't thought of that. Was it fitted after the level crossing misfunction on the Bittern Line? Why only the drive wheels?

I think that was to combat the Track Circuit actuation problems, so they fitted scrubber blocks to the outer bogies just like BR did to the 158s.

No, it had absolutely nothing to do with the Bittern Line incident. They were fitted from the factory.

Do these 'scrubbers' apply all year round? I would have thought autumn was only really of any use, and they would wear out needlessly quickly if used all the time.

Yea they work at all times. Picking up leaf mulch during autumn isn't the only wheel contamination we can pick up.
