Hi was wondering what kind of damage to the rails and the delays that can be expected due to the major freight train fire which set multiple diesel containers and cars alight (smoke still coming up this morning )

5 wagons derailed and on-fire/burnt out, further 4 derailed is the latest update.

Just seen some photos from the scene - there's a loss of signalling with 66004 now standing just beyond an unlit signal PT381, derailment appears to have occurred across Morlais Junction, which will slightly complicate both recovery and repair of damage, but with signalling to fix etc, it'll be closed for a few days.

Presumably the Heart of Wales service will now be a bus all the way as the line was already shut north of Llandrindod? RTT shows today's 2M37 Carmarthen to Llandrindod as running though. Not updated I guess.

The damage to the infrastructure from the Summit Tunnel fire resulted in the line being closed for a considerable time. I attended a charity event to walk through the tunnel just before it reopened.

6B13 is the big one, the job to Westerleigh the Theale one is generally shorter and lighter.

Either way let’s hope no one is even injured, probably the worst REC call you can get short of a nuclear incident.
Had that experience. It certainly gets you switched on at 4am, towards the end of the shift. When the driver reports "I'm on fire", and the train is in the middle of an urban area. Luckily it was only a fire on the loco and the rest of the train (6M35: Lindsey - Kingsbury tanks) was unaffected.
Good grief, nothing like poor reporting to get people panicking especially in light of recent times!
When I heard that news report last night my first thought was another 175 has gone pop. It's a good job I can find 'informed' reporting on here.

It looks like the 66 is dead on the rear of the consist with a red lamp in the window.
I'm sure I saw a picture earlier with the 66s rear lights lit as if it was coupling up.

As per comment on previous page, the 66 was sent as a rescue loco to move 14 unaffected wagons.

It was coupled up to the consist and moved some of the unaffected tankers away from what i heard.

Considering the derailed tanks which have not caught fire, I guess fuel will need to be pumped from them on site. Quite a difficult job at that location?

60062 is/was the train loco, the 1Z99 (66) sent to remove the unaffected rear portion.

Reports are there where to drivers onboard, who uncoupled the loco to enable quicker escape than on foot - I don’t blame them!

Two well earned medals I reckon.

A medal for uncoupling an engine ?

This shows the end of one of the derailed wagons folded back on itself. Must have been some huge force involved to do that

They'll do that due to vacuum created during a fire, it's not necessarily indicative of a high force impact event.

This happened on the District line, so trains can use the normal section out of Swansea to access West Wales...I think.

Services mostly normal past my house in Burry Port today so no real problems. Trains due via the District line are diverted via Landore of course.

Passenger-wise there's very little that goes via the District these days, that the does can either divert via the Landore loop or quickly nip in/out of Swansea station if the driver doesn't sign the curve.

That should be fine, depending on how wide the signalling disruption is.

Map cropped from the Adlestrop one (the derailment was at/near Llangennech):

Just as well it wasn't before the District line diverged, or the whole of the country would have been cut off from West Wales :)

I can't really tell to be honest, it looks as if the wagon has crumped on impact of the derailment but then I don't see how it has ended up like that. But then has the heat of the fire essentially welded it in on itself?

BBC has already reported all crew accounted for and uninjured thankfully

Before 8am this morning, BBC breakfast reported two crew members injured whilst at the same time the BBC website said their were no injuries!
