Quick question for those that have been in for far longer than me....

I am working 8hr late shifts (14x22) and have been asked to work my first (and only) rest day as an early turn... in order to allow me sufficient rest I have been put onto a 14x18 shift for the last late turn.... should I still get paid for a full 8hr shift for this???
Out of interest Why didn’t you ask rosters when they contacted you?

1) I had just assumed I would still get the whole shift and it was only afterwards I began to wonder...

2) Not all of the roster clerks actually have a very firm grasp of all the ins and outs of pay...

I'm happy to do the proposed changes just wanted to make sure I was getting paid correctly whatever the answer may be!

Just had the unsuccesful email for Derby x 3 without an interview. I am keeping my fingers crossed it is because they can see that I am going to get a Futures role after interviewing for that :D
Same here, however I do like your positivity RedMum, fingers crossed.

If the last turn that has been "adjusted" is a rostered turn, it will paid per what you should have worked, not what you actually end up working.

I might say that presumably also applies to those of the male sex who have changed their names upon marriage... I know of a few people :)

Like me ! It threw them when I enclosed my marriage certificate and change of name documents.

It might be beneficial to join the union and ask for representation at the meeting... otherwise you may have no idea (as someone who hasn't even started) as to what your rights are and might come out of it less favourably...???

PT&R terms will apply so no one will be disadvantaged as a result of a forced move.

Youd probably be in receipt of permanent Displaced Travel Allowance (PDTF) it’s a mileage allowance agreed for those who are moved from an SB to another upon closure.

Yes fully paid as per your original booked turn, it’s the same as when rosters want you to work over Hidden, you’ll be “Book off” your turn but still get paid.

Well, that's 3 application unsuccessfuls in 3 days without getting to an interview (2x Signaller and 1x station supervisor) talk about a disappointing week!!! Back to the drawing board I to rework my CV I think. Hopefully one day something will come up and I'll get my chance.

PDTA ;)

When I was displaced a few years ago, we were given a choice between claiming mileage (which, IIRC, you retain in perpetuity) or travel time (using public transport - which reduces in steps from I think 0-5 years).

Can be a nice little earner in some circumstances...

Don't be disheartened - but definitely not a bad thing to update your CV. I don't know how many rejections I've had so far (maybe I'm that one gentleman that @LOM mentioned a few months back!), but every rejection simply tells me I need to improve what I'm submitting. So far 3 CV revisions, the addition of a cover letter, and countless tweaks to the 70 questions.

Agreed, when I've interviewed staff in the past it's amazing how many admit to having done things "since updating my CV last" etc, so good to make sure it's as good as it can be!

Amazing how some disappointments can push you to a much higher level. I mentioned many pages back how failed applications, interviews etc made me revise the CV, 70 questions etc several times. So by the end they were much more focused and relevant. See the rejections as a positive whenever you can!!

Anyone else waiting the long wait for a start date or a signalling school placement? Got my all-clear from Onboarding just over four weeks ago now and nothing since (albeit a few "hopefully soons")!

I waited over 3 months to get my start date so it can take a while. I start at the end of this month, over 6 months after completing all the onboarding checks.

Blimey! Do you know what the circumstances were for the wait?

The more failures you have the more it makes you want the job, appreciate it and gives you a drive to succeed.

I think it was in the region of 30 apps before I got my job.

Blimey that's awful! :frown: Do you know what the circumstances were for the long long wait?
I believe the COVID situation was the main contributor as it all kicked off just after my medical. Class sizes were cut in half and the courses were to be run locally. There were a number of trainees waiting for the course in the same area so places had to be prioritised. Some trainees at my location started the course in July and I'm on the course immediately after them. It's been a long wait but I'm just grateful to be starting at all

Agreed, it took me about 10 attempts before I got a job offer. At first I sort of idly applied because the job sounded really interesting and I thought it would be something I’d enjoy, but I wasn’t desperate for it or anything. After the first rejection though I was so despondent it made me realise actually how much I wanted the job and made me be super-critical of my CV and 70 Qs. Keep plugging on, you’ll get there!

I think I will have to review my questions and CV eventually for these roles. I think keep plugging away and I will get something eventually. Good luck to all :)

I’m doing my online tests tomorrow and I’ve been taking a few practice ones in order to prepare for it, and my God, I can’t believe how difficult the practice tests were.

Are the real ones this difficult? I feel I’m gonna have no chance passing them anxiety is through the roof right now! Any opinions / help on the matter really will be appreciated.

To be honest with you, a dozen people can say there easy and you’ll be fine.

But in reality you may find them very difficult, so anyone’s opinion on the difficulty is irrelevant really.

The very best advice from someone who has been there is take a deep breath, chill and try your best.

If you fail, it’ll seem like the end of the world, like you’ll never pass them. But, do you know what? You will, if the desire is there to do so.

Personally, I’ve never bothered with any practice tests for any job. They either give you a false sense of security, or make you feel like you’ll never pass them!

Is your deadline for submitting them tomorrow? If it’s not, don’t do them tomorrow have a day to chill out and approach them for real with a fresh head.

If the deadline is tomorrow, try and put your negative experience of the practice ones out of your mind - easy said I know.

Best of luck !

Would anyone know what the overall pay would be for a grade 2 on 12 hour shifts days/nights.
Job advert says £29221, but is this without shift allowance and sundays?

It's your basic salary - what you'd earn if you worked your basic hours, no Sundays and no rest days whatsoever.

You'd have to be slightly silly to only earn that, especially on a 12 hour roster...

I'm on 12 hour shifts.

I work 7 days and 7 nights on a 4 week cycle at grade 2, that includes 1 Sunday day shift and 1 Sunday night shift.

Without overtime that's about £38k per annum if you don't contribute money to pension.

Oh and don't forget that will be bumped up more with bank Holidays depending on if you choose higher or lower rate (that info is in this thread somewhere).

So a pretty decent salary for grade 2 if you will work a similar roster to me.
