Hi All,

So unfortunately I failed the WAFV today. Passed all other computer tests and paper tests so have a long 6 month wait now. I was just wondering when applying after the 6 months will I need to redo all tests?

Thanks for all the advice on here, it really helped me to get as far as I did. Eyes playing tricks on me unfortunately for today.

Only the wafv if it's for the same company. If it's for a different company and they require a higher score you may have to do others.

Thank you

is it for TfW? If so, I think they make you redo all of them. Did you miss the black square too long or press when it hadn’t changed? It’s a horrid test, eyes go funny and hand is cramping hovering over button to press! When did you find you’d failed, straight after? Or did you get to do MMI?

There’s one or two who do make you redo them all judging by what members here have experienced.

I knew I'd failed it, for some reason I thought it had gone black for a few in a row and suddenly realised that it was just my eyes. It was for TfW, I thought she'd said I'd have to do them all again. Will I have to redo paper tests? I found out straight after the computer tests so didn't get to MMI.

I'm sorry to hear that. It might be possible to get clarity directly from the OPC about skipping paper tests.
I must stress though, when you return to the test centre, you will have to pass everything on the day first (and last) time including the MMI.

This was something I was not aware of and now I can never be a train driver!

Oh no really sorry to hear that. I knew it was two attempts and that's your lot. So added pressure for next time I suppose. I could kick myself, I knew at exactly which point I lost it.
Good luck to you whatever you go on to do

My understanding is that all the "computer" tests are considered as one test, so if you fail any part of it you will have to resit them all again. However you won't have to redo any of the paper tests such as the Group Bourdon.

Thank you, I wouldn't mind retaking all computer tests just was sure I read somewhere I wouldn't have to redo paper tests. Will have to get in touch with them to double check

Thanks Plm. It is actually quite freeing and caused me to consider other stuff more seriously such as Network Rail and the London Underground

That's it, once you start thinking there's other jobs in the railway that are just as appealing as driver. I'll definitely reapply if and when there's a job after March but I won't stop looking at other options in the mean time.

I think the only way you can have another chance is when the rules change. I think the last time it changed was either 2013 or 2014. It is harsh that one only gets two chances at this. I'm glad you were able to look at other options to keep yourself upbeat.

Yes I failed the same test first time round with Northern and when I returned I only had to do all three computer tests. Don’t worry the 6 months goes by a lot quicker than you think

It was 2013.

I can understand the frustration of the “two strikes rule”, but it’s like that for a reason and to be honest, there’s so many people who do pass these assessments, it makes no sense allowing more attempts if you do fail.

The psychometric assessments are a test of ability to be trained be a train driver, as well as the general ability to pay attention, therefore you either have the aptitude or you don’t. If people were allowed several attempts, it kind of defeats the object. Being able to fail once and retake them is reasonable, based on the fact that not everybody is great with assessments/people having off days/not feeling great etc etc.

Once you’re on a trainee driver course, you’ll often find that you only get two attempts at any assessments as a rule too.

It's true. I know a few people who are train drivers and they have told me that there's little room for error and you need to be on top of the game at all times.

Can I please ask you a hypothetical - when you attend a assessment day, and only pass the paper tests, but don’t pass the computer or SJT/MMI, you go back for your second attempt. You then pass the computer tests, but fail MMI. Do you get another shot at the MMI because you’ve never done the MMI before?

You only get one attempt on the day then have to wait 6 months before you can resit.

Sorry to hear you failed. It’s one of the tests that you think should be easy, as how hard can staring at a square be? But your mind really does start playing tricks and you realise it’s actually a very good test of concentration.

As others have said, I think it’s all the computer tests again. Good luck for next time.

Hello All

I'm looking to do my assessments in the near future. How hard is the WAFV test as even though I know you need to press the button when you see the colour change. Can it catch a person out easily?

Hi All,

I did the WAFV test yesterday with southeastern and passed, I found that moving ever so slightly forward and backwards and looking left to right at the screen would refocus my eyes towards the end, and after I saw a dark shade, I would blink quickly a few times as to not dry the eyes out.
It worked for me, but may not for others
