There aren't any buses listed on Real Time Trains past the 2nd now. I assume if the 3rd is indeed the case we'll get the official nod from NR imminently?

I'm only going on the company I work for, but our Diagrams and schedules are updated for a Tuesday opening, and was told on Monday night that this was the opening date.

There is a write-up by Roger Ford on the long time to reopen the line in the new Modern Railways (Nov 2020, page 24|).

The Scotsman is reporting the line will reopen Tuesday "dependent on bad weather forecast for this weekend not causing further damage." Official announcement supposedly later this afternoon.

Stonehaven rail line to re-open on Tuesday three months after fatal crash
A rail industry website shows replacement buses which have been running since the incident will be switched to trains on Tuesday.

The change was confirmed to The Scotsman by an industry source, with an announcement made this afternoon.
The re-opening is dependent on bad weather forecast for this weekend not causing further damage.
The route will be checked using a train without passengers running over that section on Monday.
The moves come nearly three months after a ScotRail train derailed when it hit debris after heavy rain at Carmont, south of Stonehaven, on August 12.

EDIT: Official press release appeared on the Network Rail website just after I posted this.

Aberdeen-Dundee rail line to reopen next week
The line between Aberdeen and Dundee will reopen on Tuesday, November 3, after the completion of work to repair the railway following August’s tragic derailment.
The incident caused extensive damage to the track, bridge, embankments and drainage systems at the accident site at Carmont, near Stonehaven.
The work has included:

  • Building a new 900-metre road and temporary bridges over the surrounding farmland to bring specialist lifting equipment to the site.
  • Constructing a 600-tonne crawler crane to carefully lift the derailed carriages from the railway.
  • Replacing over 500 metres of damaged track, 70 metres of bridge parapets and relaying 400 metres of telecoms cables.
  • Repairing and enhancing drainage systems and flood defences above and below the line.
  • Rebuilding the railway embankment beneath the accident site.
Alex Hynes, managing director of Scotland’s Railway, said: “We continue to work closely with accident investigators as we seek to learn the lessons of this tragedy and make our railway as safe as possible for our people and our passengers.
"Our thoughts continue to be with the families and friends of Brett, Donald and Christopher and with the other passengers and colleagues who were affected by the accident.

I don't know how to message people regarding certain threads but i'll post a bit of a small update in terms of the Aberdeen route to London Kings X resuming from 3rd November.

The Aberdeen - Dundee line is expected to fully reopen on Tuesday 3 November after the completion of the work to repair the railway following the derailment which happened in August.

A Network Rail statement and review of the work which has been done to allow the line to reopen can be found here.

Until Tuesday 3 November, all lines will remain closed between Stonehaven and Montrose and no trains will run between the stations.

Worth noting that 1E11 and 1E15 will not run on Tuesday 3rd November due to lack of rolling stock in Aberdeen. The first LNER southbound will be 1E25, formed off 1W02.

I assume the reason LNER and CrossCountry didn’t run north of Edinburgh (except for the XC Plymouth-Dundee) was because of the sheer amount of dead mileage that would have been involved running empty from Dundee to Craigentinny every night, and back again in the morning?

Fine for the occasional weekend when there’s engineering works, but not really sustainable for even the best estimates for the length of the closure back in August.

XC already do this.

Seems all
The evening Dundee service would always leave Edinburgh with passengers in single figures. Most of whom got off at Haymarket.

More than once it left Edinburgh and arrived at Dundee without a single passenger.

Surprised XC still go north of Edinburgh, One Dundee and One Aberdeen now? Going off topic...

2 Aberdeens and 1 Dundee.

There’s also the morning Dundee-Aberdeen, which runs with a “2” head code for some reason.

(A service that obviously couldn’t have still run while the line was closed...just to be mildly on topic ;))

Have they got a speed restriction through Carmont? I've noticed today that every train through there lost a few minutes.

The Press and Journal is reporting that an interim report from Police Scotland, the BTP and the RAIB has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal (= CPP in England )
Excuse the pedantry but I think that the distinction is important in this case. My reading of the P&J article is it appears that each body has submitted seperate reports to the PF.

'One of them involves Police Scotland, British Transport Police and the Office of Rail and Road, which have now provided a joint interim report to the fiscal.'

It says a joint interim report.

Classic unclear journalism I'd say from the P&J (my bold)
A Crown Office spokesman said: “The procurator fiscal has received reports in connection with the deaths of three men after a fatal crash near Stonehaven on August 12 2020.
