Watford - Southend

Fancy going from Watford to Southend today with my wife - and back. What's the best option? Contactless to Upminster followed by ticket or...?

Don't currently have a two together card because we've barely used rail travel but would renew it if significantly useful as presumably we'll be using it again some time soon.

Bonus: Is the pier railway running?

If you don't mind tapping out at Upminster (someone will know if there are readers on the platforms) the fare from Watford Jn to Upminster is £7.80 per person per direction, and from Upminster there is a Super Off Peak Return priced at £11.50 per person, which you could of course buy online (or at WFJ station) before you get to Upminster.

Other stations where you could do this include West Ham or Barking

[Or you could do the same thing at Shenfield if you take Greater Anglia from Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria; if you use the TfL single fare finder you can see the price for WFJ to SNF, and BR Fares will tell you there is a "Duo" available for £16.20 which covers both of you from Shenfield, but be warned: bus replacements would make this a very slow journey!]

Thanks Yorkie, that’s what we did.

The answer to the above question for anyone who finds this thread by google is that not only is the train not running till the 13th, the pier itself is shut!

Too late for your trip but Contactless fare from Watford Met to Upminster £5.80 or £4.20 off peak if you can stand a longer journey time
