I was just having a poke around on the Vy Nattåg website for Stockholm to Narvik and it seems to be totally sold out on whatever day you look at? Or have I missed something obvious...

Also, Norway has closed the border so are not able to buy a ticket to Narvik at the moment.

Aha, now I feel like a contestant on Taskmaster or it's Swedish cousin Bäst i test who didn't read the question properly. @JonasB's answer is more accurate. Trains run to Narvik for cleaning and turning, but passengers cannot be conveyed across the border. Tickets are only available as far as Riksgränsen.

These photos are lovely; thanks for sharing that link. I didn't know that the Skellefteå portion went all the way to Skelleftehamn (Skellefteå Harbour). Since Northvolt's vast factory and associated campus of peripheral suppliers is east of town, one cannot help but daydream that there might be passenger traffic east of Skellefteå Central.

According to the link there was quite a lot of business traffic between Skelleftehamn and Stockholm. And who knows, Skelleftehamn might be big enough for a small commuter line?

Interesting that the journey to the junction took nearly an hour then as well.

When the line was upgraded in the 1990s there where no passenger trains, so raising the speed limit was probably low priority.

I can’t see that happening, if for no other reason than a large chunk of Skellefteå is south of the Skellefteälv. Passengers aren’t going to get a bus to the station, take a very short train journey and then make their way on to their destination on foot or by another bus.

But central Skellefteå is north of the river. And there might be enough people living in Skelleftehamn and working in Skellefteå for a commuter train to work.

Skelleftehamn only has a population of just over 3,000 and many of them probably work at Rönnskär. The area between Skelleftehamn and Skellefteå has around 5,000 residents and these are rather spread out. Only a rapid transit type system would have a chance and this would be up against buses, which probably do the job just as well.

Starting 1 April 2022, one of the two Norrland night trains operated by Vy (NSB) will use the wye-track off the main line at Bastruträsk to serve Skellefteå.

Provisional times are

Northbound: Stockholm 20:44, Umeå 06:03, Skellefteå 08:40, Luleå 12:54.
Southbound: Luleå 17:00, Skellefteå 21:10, Umeå 23:45, Stockholm 08:40.

A discussion over on the Swedish Railway Club forum Postvagnen has turned to the fact that current operating regulations forbid a train to change directions at Skellefteå Central. Current speculation is that Vy's night train will actually have to continue further down the branch line towards Skelleftehamn (Skellefteå Harbour) where there exists sufficient signalling and controlds for the signaller (in Boden) to allow a locomotive to detach, re-attach and for the train to return in the opposite direction.

The discussion (in Swedish) begins at post #20 of this thread discussing the news. Google Chrome Translate can help you read it in most languages: https://www.postvagnen.com/sjk-foru...kellefteå-2022?p=153963&viewfull=1#post153963

Reportedly, trains to Skellefteå will not start on 1 April next as Trafikverket won’t approve the platform arrangements.

I am looking at taking the night train from Stockholm to Kiruna in the middle of October (just exploring options, no firm plans yet). When I go through the booking process on Vy Sverige's website, I notice that the "1st class private compartment" option is always sold out, no matter what date I choose. 2nd class beds as well as entire private compartments are available though.

I think it is somewhat unlikely that 1st class private compartments are always sold out but 2nd class is not. I suspect something else to be the case, but I'm not sure what - does anyone here have any clue as to what might be going on?

I don't know how Vy plans their trains, but SJ used to only put 1st class sleepers in the Kiruna train in the summer. The rest of the year they were used to Luleå only.

Ah, thank you. It seems like Vy have adopted the practice from SJ - if I search for Stockholm - Luleå on the same dates as before, I do get a 1st class sleeper cabin offered on the same train.

In that case you can probably travel in a 1st class sleeper if you are willing to change in Boden.

In other news, the government recently announced that they have granted Trafikverket's request to buy new rolling stock for the trains. So in a few years we will see more modern night trains to Upper Norrland.
