It will be interesting to see if ticket checks increase much from today. I believe most TOCs are moving from voluntary to compulsory ticket checks from today Monday 19/07/21
Well I had a check on a London to Norwich train earlier. I've made a couple of trips on this route recently, as this is the first check I've had.

That’s incorrect.

There are still members of traincrew who are vulnerable, have yet to have BOTH vaccines and are still susceptible to the Virus. The unions are still supporting some elements of staff protection.

Ticket checking remains optional for traincrew

I would have thought that with passengers no longer having to wear masks, guards would be less keen to check and walk through trains.

Mask wearing is still the vast majority though at the moment, so I wouldn't have thought it would make much difference yet.

Started another East Midlands Rover yesterday. The first train I boarded at around 0900 everyone waiting at my starting station including young people put on a mask, so I did as well, and 100% of people already on the train were also wearing one. But as the day went on the numbers choosing to wear masks gradually dropped to 0%.

I took 11 trains all over the valid area and was checked on the first 9; the final 2 were late at night and even in 2019 trains at those times may not have had ticket checks. All barriered stations I used were left open, even when there were plenty of staff around.

I have never got my tickets checked on my SWR / Southern / CrossCountry journeys so far, including numerous journeys between Bournemouth and Poole, and round trip Bournemouth - Southampton - Brighton on the coastal line. However, my journey yesterday on GWR had my tickets checked just north of Salisbury on both bounds.
I have made a few more train journeys in the last week and got my ticket checked a few times.

Summary for this year since May:
CrossCountry Bournemouth - Southampton Central: not checked
Great Western Railway between Salisbury and Bristol Temple Meads: both bound north of Salisbury
South Western Railway between Bournemouth and Branksome / Poole: none at all for 11 trips
South Western Railway between Bournemouth and Southampton: 3 out of 5 trips
- eastbound on London-bound stopping at Brockenhurst only: checked before and after Brockenhurst
- eastbound on Winchester-bound stopping service: checked after Brockenhurst
- westbound on Weymouth-bound non-stop service: checked
- westbound on Weymouth-bound service stopping at Brockenhust only: not checked
- westbound on Poole-bound stopping service: not checked
Southern between Southampton and Brighton: not checked

SWR 1/2, barriers in use at Salisbury in morning but open at Exeter St Davids
GWR - Both ways on Barnstaple (more for request stops), nothing on the Paignton Turbo nor 150s, barriers open at Newton Abbot. Checked on the HST from Dawlish.

Scotrail return trip into Edinburgh yesterday and ticket was checked on the way back. No checks at Edinburgh either direction.

Did hear the guard refuse to sell a railcard discounted ticket to someone onboard though - never had that before. (Not a criticism of him though - that's the rules and he was enforcing them)

On a 7 day North West Rover I only had one check on Avanti.

Also managed to get from Manchester to Thetford without a check on my way home.

I've just had my first check on board a train today; this is the 7th train I have boarded today.

There was a barrier check at Crewe though.

Today:
GWR - 2/2
Southern - 2 checks (think 1 was an RPI, the other an "on board supervisor" out of 7 services used
South Eastern - 1 Check out of 4.

Ticket checked on Saturday from Nottingham to Grimsby.
Not on trip down on the Monday though.
On Nottingham Trams I got off on Noel Street just as ticket checker army jumped on the tram.
^I had tickets for all trips ofcourse, trams are bargains, train fares are rip-offs.

Nothing (as expected) in either direction on TfW Telford to Shrewsbury yesterday.
My observation on that is that fare avoidance at Shrewsbury would be tricky except for the most hardened yobbage due to the well-staffed barrier control (unless you arrive on platform 3). Actually had a ticket check on the Cambrian Line yesterday for the first time in ages.

Quite agree, there were lengthy queues at the Shrewsbury barriers.

SWR checked on the way to London, not on the way back home
GA - Nothing on the 745s, but had a check on the train from Clacton on the approach to Colchester [I was in the front unit, so I assume it was a RPI]

Barriers wide open (at least on the London bound platforms side) at Colchester around 4pm

I travelled the following on Saturday

13:32 London St Pancras - Loughborough (Gates working @ London St Pancras and Loughborough. Full check by guard between London and Leicester)

15:58 Loughborough - Leicester stoppper (Gates open @ Leicester and Loughborough. Full call over by guard on leaving Loughborough and fares taken at subsequent stops)

17:50 Leicester - Nuneaton (Gates open at Leicester. Full check by 1 x guard with another doing doors)

19:21 Nuneaton - Leicester (Nothing)

20:13 Leicester - London St Pancras ( gates open at Leicester & London St Pancras and no check)

from speaking to EMR Station staff I believe most of the open gatelines were down to the pingdemic which would also explain skymonsters experiences at Derby. Apparently they would normally be staffed at the times I went through
