Freightliner, which is a well-known freight haulage company, is working with a group of specialist suppliers and has bid successfully for funding to create a dual-fuel solution for the running of the Class 66 locomotive.
The project aims to find a replacement for diesel, with a hydrogen and biogas product for the hardworking Class 66, which haul more than 80% of UK rail freight.
Any idea how that’s going to work? Replace part of the diesel tank with hydrogen tanks - I assume there isn’t any spare room inside a 66 for them??

Worthwhile cause... but first thing I'd do is speak to EM/EMD/PR (as manufacturer) to see what the current engine is capable of handling, fuel wise. We know that DB have managed to use vegetable oil/mix without major upheaval.

This isn't as simple as adjusting the fuel mix/recipe like has been forced on road fuel... with increased bio-fuel content over the last few years. Even if hydrogen etc is compatible with the existing 720 engine, what extra maintenance may be required to to damage being done to things like pipes, valves and rubber gaskets
