On Monday 27/12, I'm wanting to travel from Manchester Piccadilly to Euston, as part of a longer journey to Ramsgate. I'm proposing to travel on the 07:31 Transport for Wales to Crewe, changing onto the 08:16 London NW Railway to Euston.

TfW and LNWR have very cheap fares to Euston, with a Super Off-Peak Single priced at £22.40 with a 16-25 railcard:

I'm wanting to check I'm reading the restriction data right, and that on Monday 27/12/21, I can use this on any train, and the rather restrictive 'JN' restriction code doesn't apply on that day?
Thanks!

The 0816 I've seen cancelled a few times in recent weeks, something to be aware of.

I have gone from Manchester to London via Crewe because of this very reason.. WCML is so expensive these days.
It probably helps that I quite like trains and visiting any interchange station is actually enjoyable for me .. maybe not so viable for the regular commuter.. but the cost saving is definitely there over going direct.

It seems that the "LM Express" on Trent Valley Line ia gaining popularity with the very cheap super off peak fares.
However, it may make it overloaded somehow, in section between Rugby and London

It doesn't help heading northbound that most hours if someone arrives at Euston in time for the XX:49 Birmingham train they can catch the XX:46 Crewe train to change at rugby for a 15odd minute connection into a Northampton - Birmingham train which gets them into Birmingham 25 minutes ahead of the direct train. (Assuming the passenger has an open ticket).
Although from memory it doesn't work heading southbound.

From rugby to London the service from Crewe doesn't take that much longer than the Avanti service and it is a lot cheaper

And the similar case for heading to Liverpool, with the Birmingham - Liverpool train just timed 4 minutes after the arrival of Euston - Crewe train.
If the Birmingham train is timed one minute later, the LM only ticket will get even more attractive.

Although I can see some buying the LNR only fare for London - Liverpool and hoping they can make that unofficial connection at Crewe, with the downside that if the train does run late and the connection is missed having an hour to waste at Crewe station. (But I can think of worst stations to have to spend an hour at)

Just a reminder yesterday, Transport for Wales yesterday only ran around 8 of the 17 services between Crewe and Manchester, stating that it was due to the emergency timetable." - trains were deleted, not cancelled, with them claiming it was a semi-permanent change. Today, a number of those services were re-added, but it still leaves a quite sporadic, patchy service during the afternoon and evening, with some three hour (TfW) gaps in service.

But Crewe to Manchester IS the WCML?
Getting off-topic I know, but I live on the Crewe-Manchester line and I don't regard it as "the WCML", which I think of as the London-Glasgow line only. I live on a branch off the WCML.

Some were on the day cancellations due to uncovered turns but the 12:31/15:31/18:31/21:35 from Manchester have been removed from the timetable, not sure when until though.

Seems to have been P-coded, so only done the night before.

Alternatively, Stafford is another station that can be used for interchange, slightly better

Best to gently educate rather challenge newbies or they won't come back!
Is it really the WCML though? I have always believed and thought of the section to Manchester as a “branch” of the WCML the same way as Liverpool.

Trains to Manchester trains leave at Colwich if running via Stoke or at Crewe if running via Sandbach. In the case of Liverpool they leave near Acton Bridge.

As the terminus of the line is Glasgow, Crewe - Warrington Bank Quay and beyond is the WCML is it not?

I agree, looks as though you got there first

Ironically I ended up oversleeping, so missed the 07:31 from Piccadilly, which would have rendered my advance from St Pancras to Faversham useless, so I shelled out the £45-ish for a single on Avanti; and I'm currently waiting for TPE to refund my TfW/LNWR booking. One of the days where both trains run to time though, and I miss them both - typical!

Thanks to yourself and @yorkie for the reply though.

But Manchester-Crewe-Euston is one of the 3tph Avanti services so is as much "direct" as via Stoke.
Indeed when HS2 starts it will be effectively the only route.
