Folks, new to the forum.... can anyone tell me what hours and shifts a Virgin Pendalino driver does in a typical day.. ie.. a 10.40 service from Glasgow Central to London Euston.. would he drive both down and up or would the journey be split? Thanks in advance :D

He'd work it to Preston, have a personal needs break (PNB), then could go either to Wolves on a SuperVoyager, then Pendo to Euston, PNB, Pendo to Preston/Manc/Liv (Pass to Preston) PNB, then work back to Glasgow.

Or he could go Glasgow - Preston - Edin/London - Pres - Glas. Insert PNB as appropriate.

Cue Phillip Elliot- a traincrew diagrammer for VT. He should be able to provide a comprehensive answer.

Only Preston drivers do the whole WCML, no idea about link structures.

Should imagine a typical early would be

Book on - get a train from the depot- work the train to Preston- pnb - work train to Glasgow - finish

And reverse of the above for a late, but this is just what I guess, as I don't work there I don't know.

I can confirm that only Preston drivers sign the full Euston-Crewe-Preston-Carlisle-Glasgow, I assume that Glasgow men would sign as far as Preston, and Edinburgh-Carstairs, as well as diversionary routes via Shotts, and maybe the S&C :D

As a slight follow-on from that...do any passenger workings involve lodging nowadays. When I started only Kings Cross, Newcastle and Edinburgh blokes were lodging.

W+S lodge; they also do a lodge turn for the Moor St workings for Chiltern.

As few as I knew, Glasgow also signed all the way into London on the WCML. Actually, if I can dig out the post from wnxx, he gave a thorough run-down of illustrative workings etc.

Maybe its just me but, just seems like an odd question to ask really, same with your other thread asking if FOC drivers are alone in the cab

I find this kind of stuff quite interesting...

I agree, but its just me, I just saw it as "New guy joins the forum, makes 2 threads one asking when drivers change over, and one asking if FOC drivers are alone in the cab"

Is this not what this forum is for??

I know there is alot of people in this forum who have a good understanding of the railways but we have all got to start out somewhere!

Surely for the West Coast between Glasgow and Euston, Glasgow drivers would do a return to Preston. Preston drivers a return to either Glasgow or London, and London drivers a return to Preston. Basically exactly the same as on the ECML.
For Liverpool and Manchester, It would be one return between London and one of the above. Or Vice versa if your based in Pool or Manc.
Not sure about Holyhead, but on those that are dragged, im guessing its a different driver from Crewe.

There are no Holyhead based drivers, I would assume it is Liverpool men who work it, and Manchester/Liverpool men work their respective routes, and any necessary diversionary routes, to London. AFAIK, the only men who sign Crewe-Preston via Wigan NW are Wolves, Euston and Preston men, and the only ones who sign north thereof are Preston and Glasgow men. Euston men I assume work to Wolves, Liverpool, Manchester and Preston, I think Preston men sign Chester too, as do Euston.

Most turns that don't require a ECS movement off/onto depot will have double what you've suggested, ie London - Manc - London - Liv - London.

Virgin crew did a deal so now they can't go over the same track twice in a shift, ie do London - Manc - London - Manc - London.

Can you confirm that a 57 drag still requires two drivers - one in the 57 and one in the Pendolino?

What does a driver do when he wants to go to the toilet at the start of the journey? Not a joke question.

They go beforehand, or leg it if they have a 2-3 minute wait in a station at a guess, not much they can go though.

Have you any ambitions to join the railway Striker?

Why do you ask?

Go to the toilet.

I believe some of the Euston to Glasgow services go non-stop from Euston to Preston. Am I right in thinking there is only one driver? In which case, what happens when, just after leaving Euston, the driver feels that urge to shake his snake?

Go beforehand, you cannot abandon your post for the entire journey, and I think your manager would have serious words if you tried otherwise... loving the description though!
