Hello everybody!...

I want to take my son out to a preserved railway... actually I want to go but its a great excuse the other half lol!...

She gets a quiet day in and I get to go play trains lol

So here it goes... I'm in Chelmsford and I want to go to a preserved railway in the UK for a day trip which runs in the winter... in January onwards

I have a Priv pass and a ticket for all of NXEA...

So taking that into considderation where can I go?

Thanks!!!

I think that part of the Severn Valley will be closed for engineering works in the Highley area over the winter so only a limited service is running, not over the full length of the line.

Mid Hants is open every weekend, and also every day during February half term, and as easy as anywhere else to get to by train from Chelmsford.

Great Central has a service every weekend in January, with 2 trains in operation (1 DMU 1 steam). Good to go on the DMU with its forward vision and watch the Steam train going the other way on the double track...

I'm not sure if the santa special is finished yet but the Isle of Wight steam railway was a great day out. We also took a passenger ferry to get across from Portsmouth harbor which has a rail link direct to the boats if you wanted to take that route. I'm not sure of the site but type it into google.

K&WVR railway runs a 45 minute interval service on Sundays throughout the year now. In winter they do this by keeping the the DRB or DMU on all day after the morning runs. This is such a massive improvement to the previous one engine in steam operation that ran on winter Sundays until last year: two trains running means you don't have to just trundle up and down, and there is quite simply no cosier train on a cold winter's day than the DRB.
