There was a thread on this a while ago. There are BR1,BR1A,BR1B and BR1C keys. There’s probably mm’s between them but there is a difference, possibly an old regional thing.

They also shouldn't be changing hands on ebay! Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be an appropriate reporting category for it, which is a shame.
Is there not a generic ‘prohibited items’ option?

I repoted it under "government items", well British Rail were part of the government.

Is there actually any legal restriction in selling them? If not, eBay won't care. Their plate is full with actual illegal items, that they do get into trouble for selling, to worry about things which just shouldn't be sold.

Nope, it has to fit into a very generic category, none of which cover railway keys.

I'm not sure there is, unfortunately. There ought to be!

Just like carriage keys, BR1 keys are not exclusive to the national railway as BR consistently sold off rolling stock to preservation societies and individuals.
Im not aware that any stipulation was made that locks must be changed and so I can’t see any illegality in selling a useful piece of equipment for volunteers and tourist railways.

I was actually listing a few vintage bus tkeys and other vintage bus cupboard keys on ebay a while ago and had both listings taken down because they could provide "access to prohibited areas"

I got mine cut at an ironmongers in Bridgnorth, using a fellow SVR volunteers genuine one as the master. Mine does the job, it just doesn't have the BR1 marking on it. My need for it - locking/unlocking gangway doors.

Never seen or heard of a BR1C key.

Have you got a pic/photo of one, or did you mean a BR16 key, which I believe is usually a short stubby key for opening an "Old English" type railway padlock.

Very probably. They give access to a vast array of doors and other gubbins on ex-BR stock; less so on newer stuff.

Lots of
Things still on the network. I guess a decreasing number. but an example of something until a couple of years back was the cabin doors on mk3 sleeper carriages.

No it’s a BR1C. I’ve got one of each in a drawer somewhere but do think I can find them?

Ive been on the footplate for 35 years and I've never seen a flat one!!
1 and 1B are identical. Plus that flat ones unlocking teeth look the same as a 1B

I've seen a couple of flat ones and even had one myself when I first started. The Teeth should all be 'identical'

Another 'Flat' one.

When I first started the 'old boys' would swap the keys with you because the old BR1s needed a little jiggle in a lock because they never quite fitted. So you would swap because theirs would be smoother in the locks. All they were doing is getting BR1 style keys off the newbies !!

I think the flat ones are the descendents of the LNER 21 keys which were equivalent to the BR1 but shorter and, err, flat
