Just wondering who I should call in the below instance? (I've reported it by direct message on twitter, they're yet to reply).

A rarely used metal crossing gate (for vehicles) near me on an industrial estate has been padlocked in the unlocked position therefore impossible to close it without a key.

In the wind, the gate has been swinging open and banging into a parked car beside it, now with various scratches and damaged headlight cover.

I could see there was a yellow telephone there and also a land sherrifs number, all of which emphasising emergency use only.
Given that the crossing has practically no purpose for vehicles because the other side is just a brownfield site with no other access (plus locked on the other side anyway) and that there is already a public foot crossing beside it , I didn't feel it an emergency.

Should I just call land sherrifs anyway to report, obviously NR have left it unlocked by mistake

I can't imagine a signaller would have any issue with a call on the yellow phone made in good faith in a situation like that. Ultimately an unsecured gate onto the railway is a risk in terms of both safety and security.

I would suggest calling the Network Rail helpline on 03457114141.

Any issue with a level crossing can certainly be reported to the signaller using the direct (yellow) phone at the crossing. Open gates like this would likely get an immediate response from a MOM if available.

I will "consider" ringing them?
That is a clumsy choice of words considering the OP wanted a number to call to report this.

Any gate left open or secured open that allows access to the railway is a safety risk and needs reporting. In my job I would much rather know and have someone go and attend to secure the gate, rather than have trespass or worse utilising the open gate.

Apologies for any conflict in words, I used the "consider" in my later reply as network rail had since replied on twitter advising they'd report it. (I should have clarified)

If it's still unlocked then I will ring them

-edit, just rang to check if they've received my query and no answer on the safety related emergencies helpline as per post #3, so will try again a bit later

Bridges have plaques on them giving a number to ring regarding incidents. In the Bristol area it's 01793 533592, not sure if it changes by area, but given that 01793 is Swindon, I suspect so.

I used that once to report what appeared to be a loose bolt in a set of points (I had watched a heavy freight use them and it seemed to me that one of the bolts holding the chair to the sleeper was wobbling in a way it really shouldn't). Got an email from the local track gang a few days later thanking me for my report and saying they'd been out and tightened a few suspect bolts in the area. So I would recommended it as a very effective way of reporting something that doesn't seem like an emergency but you think someone should look into!

They are different, in my area they all have a Darlington area code as I recall.

That number would be the respective control office for that route. East Coast route calls should be York, whilst East Midlands should be Derby. It isn't the always the case however.

Yes to both, and for an immediate safety issue do not hesitate to ring that number, however it rings out as an Emergency line in Control and will therefore be answered immediately, if necessary at the expense of other business. The number has been used in the past for complaints about pigeon droppings and, once, for a car treasure hunt !

Swindon is where Western Route control is located.
