There has been a EMR class 180, sat down on the up fast line at Luton Airport since 0540. Only the leading door behind the cab is platformed.

Realtime trains says 180109

Below is taken from National Rail
A long distance service has developed a fault, blocking one of the four platforms at Luton Airport Parkway. Specialist engineers have attended and determined that the operation to get the train moving will need to happen at a quieter time so as not to disrupt train running further. Therefore, the train will be moved during the night, meaning trains running through Luton Airport station today will pick up delays of approximately 10 minutes today.

Guess that means it'll need to be moved at 5mph on a wheelskate?

Good old 109, never ceased to be a pain in the bum in its later years with Hull Trains, good to see it is continuing with EMR

So over the last week we have lost 180109, 180114 and 180105. A very bad week for the units!
(I know 105 may not have been a unit fault but it will not be fit for traffic anytime soon after running through that buffer stop)

I wonder if the fault on 109 is the same that occurred on 114 last Thursday on the ECML? 114 suffered a complete electrical shutdown on the unit and could not be restarted.

Suggested elsewhere EMR 109 at Luton Airport Parkway has a seized final drive (which would account for the challenge in moving it, which is not expected to happen until tonight).

I'm informed the gudgeon pin that secures the cardan shaft to the final drive has snapped. Just my luck, should've been on it later, got a 4 car 222 instead.

Might be to do with being maintained at the same depot since new where as 180s have been nomadic.

Seems to be on the move now as 5C00. Currently on the DF at Harlington.

I was on 180109 on the 20:05 service from STP last night and there seemed to be some big problems with acceleration when departing stations along the way - like it was accelerating for 5 seconds, then coasting at tick-over revs for 5 seconds, accelerating for 5 seconds, and then tick-over revs for 5 seconds, and again and again like that until it was up to about 90-100mph and then accelerated fine.

Given it wasn’t sounding too clever last night, I’m not surprised by today’s fault.

In the April 2022 edition of Todays Railways UK Gareth Race EMRs Head of Fleet Programmes is quoted as saying "the 180 fleet may have had a chequered history, but after a difficult start with EMR they are actually performing very reliably"

Goven todays events and the fact that only two out of the four sets are needed each day and when these are used they cover less millage than when they were with Hull Trains perhaps these words were spoken a bit to soon. Personaly given the current state of the rolling stock and the service overall I'm not sure anyone at EMR should be going round thinking that they're done a great job or that all is well on the MML.

I used 180114 a couple of Saturdays ago and the unit developed (from what I could tell) a passcom fault just north of Luton, followed then by a door fault at Market Harborough.

Tucked up at Kettering for the night. On a wheel skate so i'm told, which would hint at a final drive problem.

Remember, it'll be at no more than what, 20MPH and on wheel skates though. Will it be on it's own or dragged by another unit I wonder.
Interesting that according to RTT there’s nothing out of the norm booked into Kettering Stabling Sidings today, so unless there’s another 180 already there…?

Another 180 came to collect it.
20mph all the way (5mph across points). Stop every 10miles to check the skate.

You can see pathing stops of around 15 minutes along the way(skate checks).

Will it be on skates . Via Melton is also quite a bit of absolute block signalling and slow linespeed compared to MML.

As there are also a possessions in Anglia, the liners are diverted via London so there's not a lot of traffic to get in the way during its very slow journey to Derby.

More than six hours from Kettering to Derby!!!
It took over 3 hours to just to get as far as Corby due faults with the pair of 180s.

With another failed 180 stuck in a loop near Newark following these attempts to rescue tge 180s is providing great entertainment. Who needs Eastenders for drama?
