Given that I was in London on Bank Holiday Monday at 21:30 and needed to get home to Nuneaton, what cheaper choice did I have?
I have no idea, but part of life is planning around what you want to do and sometimes accepting that your choices have an added cost.

There were easements in place allowing Avanti Advance ticket holders to travel via Bedford. In many cases these were being sold on itineraries where the only Avanti leg was the replacement bus between Rugby and Kettering, or between Milton Keynes and Bedford.

That said, if you did not want to use this bus, I am sure there would also have been other tickets which would have enabled you to travel via Leicester without needing to split and/or for less than what you paid.
If there were routes from London to Nuneaton at 21:30 via Bedford, the booking engines did not know about it.

Given that this closure happens quite often, I'd love to know how to find these cheaper tickets via Leicester. Trainsplit and other websites don't seem to know anything that is cheaper than what I pay when the WCML is open.

This was for an event booked and paid for in May 2021. If I'm following you correctly, you're saying that my cheaper choice was not to need to travel at a time when trains are normally running? That's not really a constructive contribution, is it? Your first argument about capacity is reasonable. Your follow-up line saying I made a choice to pay more, was a needless jibe.

I maintain it's unreasonable for the rail industry to expect passengers to pay more for a longer route than usual, when that is the only one available because of planned closures.

I travelled back via Bedford & MKC with a Bow Brickhill - London Zone 1-6 travelcard route Bletchley
When the West Coast Mainline is closed for engineering south of Rugby, why are there no easements to allow Nuneaton-London travel via Leicester? Last weekend I had to buy two separate, and much more expensive, tickets for a much longer journey. Seems unreasonable.
Where did you start from?

Central London on Bank Holiday Monday 2 May. Event finished just after 21:00 and I needed to get home to Nuneaton. Via Leicester with a ticket split at Hinckley was the cheapest option I could find. No options via Bedford were coming up.

I think you mean via Rugby (as you would also be going via Bedford in order to change at Leicester)? In which case I would agree - the last itinerary via Rugby appears to have been on the 20:45 EMR service from St Pancras, changing at Bedford and Milton Keynes.

Given that this closure happens quite often, I'd love to know how to find these cheaper tickets via Leicester. Trainsplit and other websites don't seem to know anything that is cheaper than what I pay when the WCML is open.
I'd suggest a ticket from Hinckley to London. Available both as route via Nuneaton and Any Permitted (which is valid via Nuneaton or Leicester). You'd need to call at Hinckley and buy an additional ticket between Nuneaton and Hinckley/vice versa, but it's fair bit cheaper than splitting at Leicester for example. Or you could split at Luton Airport Parkway or Kettering.

For a daytrip, you could alternatively have used a Nuneaton Travelcard, but obviously that would not necessarily be of assistance for a trip involving an overnight stay.

This was for an event booked and paid for in May 2021. If I'm following you correctly, you're saying that my cheaper choice was not to need to travel at a time when trains are normally running? I agree; it's frankly embarrasing. The rail industry comes up with all sorts of excuses as to why it's OK to charge more for a slower and more inconvenient journey during engineering works. I suppose at the root of it is the fact that most TOCs would rather that passengers didn't travel at all during the engineering work.

Well, you hadn't previously mentioned that it was something you'd booked so far in advance, but I'm afraid that there are always risks with doing that. We can all be caught out by things like that, and at least you had an alternative even if it was at higher cost.

Some changes in the routeing guide were published this afternoon.
Changes from 04 May 2022 (383) to 11 May 2022 (384).
Easement changes:
Added:
700989 (Local) The Severn Tunnel will be closed between te 01 and 10 July 2022. Customers from Severn Tunnel Junction, Caldicot, Chepstow and Lydney travel to Cam & Dursley, Yate, Bristol Parkway , Filton Abbeywood, Lawrence Hill, Stapleton Road and Bristol Temple Meads, or to destinations via Bristol Parkway may travel on trains via Gloucester to avoid using the rail replacement bus service. This Local easement applies in both directions.
This diversion may be faster than the bus, depending on where you're going. This easement covers Gloucester, but not Cheltenham, so you may need to be careful of sites which suggest a route through there. Pilning is served by shuttles from Bristol Parkway, so is covered by this easement.

700990 (Fare route) The Severn Tunnel will be closed between 01 and 10 July 2022. Customers travelling from Chepstow and Lydney with tickets priced on route (00843) VIA SEVERN TUNNEL JUNCTION, may travel via Gloucester. This Fare Route easement applies in both directions.
The "via Severn Tunnel" route is only used for journeys between Lydney or Chepstow and stations in and around Bristol, so this is comprehensive.

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):
700988 (Map) During engineering work closures of the Severn Tunnel between Friday 01 July 2022 and Sunsday 10 July 2022, this map easement will allow journeys via Gloucester that are not normally permittedthat have permitted routes via Severn Tunnel (but not via Chepstow) to travel via Gloucester, Chepstow and Newport. The easement works operates in both directions.
This has been reworded. It's encoded in the same way as before.

The following post was made on 14 May 2022.

Some more changes were published in the routeing guide yesterday.
Changes from 11 May 2022 (384) to 13 May 2022 (385).
Easement changes:
Added:
700991 (Routeing Point) The Severn Tunnel will be closed between 01 and 10 July 2022. Customers from Severn Tunnel Junction, Caldicot, Chepstow and Lydney travelling to Cam & Dursley, Yate, Bristol Parkway , Filton Abbeywood, Lawrence Hill, Stapleton Road and Bristol Temple Meads, or to destinations via Bristol Parkway may travel on trains via Gloucester to avoid using the rail replacement bus service. This Routeing Point easement applies in both directions.
This is almost a "routeing point easement" version of 700989, except that the data for it doesn't cover journeys to Lydney from beyond Bristol Parkway. This means that (say) a Bath-Lydney single isn't shown as being valid via Gloucester when this takes effect, but a Lydney-Bath one is.
700992 (Fare route) Due to engineering works, on Sunday 12 June 2022, customers travelling from Ashchurch, Cheltenham Spa and Gloucester on tickets priced on (00807) VIA Stroud, (00417) AP KEMBLE NOT LONDON, (00418) AP KEMBLE SLOUGH to or via Oxford may travel may travel via Evesham. This easement applies in both directions.
There are no trains scheduled through Stroud until mid-afternoon, with Gloucester-Swindon buses running instead.

This easement covers most of the ticket routes via Stroud, but leaves out "via Reading, Stroud and London", which is used for (as an example) all of the flexible Cheltenham-Basildon tickets.
Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

700989 (Local) The Severn Tunnel will be closed between te 01 and 10 July 2022. This Local easement applies in both directions.
This improves the wording. The data remains unchanged.

Some changes were published in the routeing guide on Wednesday.
Changes from 13 May 2022 (385) to 18 May 2022 (386).

Easement changes:

Added:

700993 (Doubleback) Customers travelling to Chandlers Ford or Romsey on journeys that travel via Winchester may not doubleback between Eastleigh and Southampton Airport Parkway. This circuitous route easement applies in both directions.
This is a negative double back easement, although the routeing guide states that those are always positive. nre.co.uk may have implemented it as a circuitous route one instead, as the site appears to block some routes because of it which don't involve a double back. Other web sites may have implemented it in a different way.

The double back via Southampton Airport Parkway remains useful, even if it needs different tickets, as it makes a return journey between Chandler's Ford and London around 45 minutes shorter.

700994 (Map) To mitigate early morning service changes between 30 May 2022 and 03 June 2022. This map easement will allow journeys from or via Swindon to Bath or Bristol to travel via Westbury. This map easement applies in both directions.
I'm not sure what need this easement is mean to address, as the service seems to be fairly normal during that week; certainly compared with the one before it.

I searched for a few journeys on nre.co.uk, but couldn't find a Bath-Swindon journey via Westbury which it said was valid. The text makes things pretty clear, though.

Route changes:

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

VIA UNDERGRD/DLR (00998) (368 records)
must not go via Acton Main Line (AML), Burnham (BNM), Brentwood (BRE), Chadwell Heath (CTH), Ealing Broadway (EAL), Forest Gate (FOG), Gidea Park (GDP), Goodmayes (GMY), Heathrow Term 4 (HAF), Hanwell (HAN), Hayes & Harlington (HAY), Harold Wood (HRO), Heathrow Term 5 (HWV), Heathrow Term123 (HXX), Ilford (IFD), Iver (IVR), Langley (LNY), Maidenhead (MAI), Manor Park (MNP), Maryland (MYL), Reading (RDG), Romford (RMF), Slough (SLO), Shenfield (SNF), Southall (STL), Seven Kings (SVK), Taplow (TAP), Twyford (TWY), West Drayton (WDT) or West Ealing (WEA)
may only use Grand Central (GC), Gatwick Express (GX), Heathrow Express (HX), Island Line (IL), Lumo (LD), London Overground (LO), Merseyrail (ME), Northern (NT), Transpennine Express (TP), TfL Rail (XR) and Crosscountry (XC) trains.
must include train or tube
"via Underground/DLR" tickets are available as singles and returns for a few journeys within the London zones. This change means they can be used more widely, but not usually on the TfL Rail lines to Heathrow, Reading or Shenfield.

Some more changes were published yesterday.
Changes from 18 May 2022 (386) to 20 May 2022 (387).

Easement changes:

Added:

700995 (Fare route) During engineering works over the weekends of the 16/17 and 23/24 July 2022, customers travelling from Ledbury, Colwall, Great Malvern, Malvern Link, Worcester Foregate Street, Worcester Shrub Hill and Worcestershire Parkway to Didcot and beyond. With tickets priced on routes (00799) LONDON EVESHAM, (00805) VIA EVESHAM and (00433) AP EVESHAM, may travel on trains via Stroud or Cam & Dursley. This fare route easement applies in both directions.
There are buses between Charlbury and Moreton-in-Marsh then. The data for the easement is more restrictive than the text, as it does not show the easement as applying to journeys via Oxford (as with a Worcester-Oxford Parkway ticket), or to ones which don't go via Swindon (such as Worcester-Salisbury).

700996 (Map) During engineering works over the weekends of the 16/17 and 23/24 July 2022, customers travelling from Ledbury, Colwall, Great Malvern, Malvern Link, Worcester Foregate Street, Worcester Shrub Hill and Worcestershire Parkway to Didcot and beyond. With tickets priced on routes (00799) LONDON EVESHAM, (00805) VIA EVESHAM and (00433) AP EVESHAM. May travel on train services via Bristol Parkway and/or Swindon. This map easement applies in both directions
This covers the same dates as 700995, and adds a route from Worcester to Swindon via Bristol Parkway or Stroud for people with those tickets.

700997 (Local) Customers travelling from Cardenden, Lochgelly, Cowdenbeath, Dunfermline Queen Margaret, Dunfermline Town and Rosyth to Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes with Thornton, Markinch, Dalgetty Bay, Aberdour, Burntisland, Kinghorn and Ladybank may travel via Inverkeithing. This local easement applies in both directions.
The rail service in Fife has been reduced, with the service to Glenrothes with Thornton becoming an hourly train to Edinburgh via Dunfermline, with a few extras. This easement goes some way to compensate for this by making through tickets valid on a longer route via Inverkeithing.

I think Glenrothes with Thornton might be in the wrong list here, though. A ticket between there to Burntisland wouldn't benefit from this easement, and one to Dunfermline wouldn't need it.

700998 (Routeing Point) Customers travelling from Cardenden, Lochgelly, Cowdenbeath, Dunfermline Queen Margaret, Dunfermline Town and Rosyth to or via Ladybank may travel via Inverkeithing. This routeing point easement overrides NFM64 fares checking and applies in both directions.
This is similar to 700997, but covers longer distance journeys.

It doesn't cover Glenrothes with Thornton as it's part of a routeing point. This means that Routeing Point easements don't affect it, and also that it is unlikely to need an easement for this sort of journey anyway.

Route changes:

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

VIA CARMARTHEN (00648) (1520 records)
AP CARMARTHEN (07772) (357 records)
must go via Carmarthen (CMN)
must not go via Shrewsbury Craven Arms
must include bus

VIA ABERYSTWYTH (00649) (1499 records)
AP ABERYSTWYTH (07775) (327 records)
must go via Aberystwyth (AYW)
must not go via Shrewsbury Craven Arms
must include bus
TfW plan to extend these routes into the West Midlands next month, so this is intended to let the dedicated tickets be used on them. I couldn't find any when I checked, however, so they may still need to update the version of this table in the fare data.

VIA UNDERGRD/DLR (00998) (368 records)
must not go via Acton Main Line (AML), Burnham (BNM), Brentwood (BRE), Chadwell Heath (CTH), Ealing Broadway (EAL), Forest Gate (FOG), Gidea Park (GDP), Goodmayes (GMY), Heathrow Term 4 (HAF), Hanwell (HAN), Hayes & Harlington (HAY), Harold Wood (HRO), Heathrow Term 5 (HWV), Heathrow Term123 (HXX), Ilford (IFD), Iver (IVR), Langley (LNY), Maidenhead (MAI), Manor Park (MNP), Maryland (MYL), Reading (RDG), Romford (RMF), Slough (SLO), Shenfield (SNF), Southall (STL), Seven Kings (SVK), Taplow (TAP), Twyford (TWY), West Drayton (WDT) or West Ealing (WEA)
may only use Grand Central (GC), Gatwick Express (GX), Heathrow Express (HX), Island Line (IL), Lumo (LD), London Overground (LO), Merseyrail (ME), Northern (NT), Transpennine Express (TP), Crosscountry (XC) and TfL Rail (XR) trains.
must include train or tube
The only trains these can be used on in the London area are overseen by TfL.

Cross-London journey changes:

Cross-London transfers may now be made from Abbey Wood (ABW), Balham (BAL), Battersea Park (BAK), Brixton (BRX), Canada Water (ZCW), Greenwich (GNW), Lewisham (LEW), Limehouse (LHS), Queenstown Road (Battersea) (QRB), Shadwell (SDE), Stratford International (SFA), West Brompton (WBP), West Hampstead Thameslink (WHP), Whitechapel (ZLW) and Woolwich Arsenal (WWA).
I don't know what effect this table has.

There are separate "fixed link" tables in the timetable data which nre.co.uk seems to use to decide where you can transfer between railway stations. It shows a through ticket as being valid with changes at Greenford and South Ruislip, whereas neither is listed in this one.

Surely it depends how you interpret ‘Didcot and beyond’? Oxford is beyond Didcot via Swindon, but not via the Cotswold line. Could it be the easement is only meant to apply to the latter?

Given it refers to tickets routed via Evesham it would be difficult to argue that Oxford is beyond Didcot.

Haven't looked into it but I think that one is different as it's an interavailable route? I.e. it's not technically a "cross-London" Underground journey.

If an easemeent is implemented in a fairly straightforward way (as this one is), "beyond Didcot" means "somewhere you go through Didcot on the way". If you take advantage of this easement to travel via Bristol Parkway and/or Swindon to Oxford Parkway, then you will pass through Didcot on the way.

That's what they are, but not what they do. I know that, if I search for a journey from West Brompton to Ealing Broadway on nre.co.uk, it won't suggest I use the District Line, simply because the data it uses doesn't mention that route.

I can see that this list has changed, but I don't know if it affects anything a passenger would notice.

I don't know anything about that, sorry. I do notice that "via Greenford" tickets don't have a Maltese Cross on them, so maybe the decision to do that was based on similar reasoning.

The double back via Southampton Airport Parkway remains useful, even if it needs different tickets, as it makes a return journey between Chandler's Ford and London around 45 minutes shorter.
This seems to be an example of a route permitted by the 3-mile rule being overruled by an easement. (Eastleigh to Southampton Airport Parkway being 1.25 miles one way or 2.5 miles return.)
700997 (Local) Customers travelling from Cardenden, Lochgelly, Cowdenbeath, Dunfermline Queen Margaret, Dunfermline Town and Rosyth to Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes with Thornton, Markinch, Dalgetty Bay, Aberdour, Burntisland, Kinghorn and Ladybank may travel via Inverkeithing. Yes, most of these journeys would have been accepted going "the wrong way around the loop" in the past. If that's the route I'm thinking of.

Some more changes were published in the routeing guide yesterday.
Changes from 20 May 2022 (387) to 01 Jun 2022 (388).

Map changes:
EU: Gain Clapham Junction to/from Wimbledon
This map is used in 462 routes.
This doesn't add any valid routes to the journeys which use this map, from what I can see, but it may help with easements. I'm thinking of ones like 700452, which permits journeys such as Motspur Park-Basingstoke via Clapham Junction, but where nre.co.uk (as an example) doesn't show this.

Easement changes:

Added:
700999 (Fare route) During engineering works on the 16 and 17 August 2022, tickets priced on (00807) VIA STROUD, (00808) READING STROUD INCLUDING LONDON, (00803) EVESHAM/STROUD, (00827) LONDON STROUD/EVESHAM, (00418) AP KEMBLE/SLOUGH and (00417 AP KEMBLE NOT LONDON will be valid via Yate, Cam & Dursley and Bristol Parkway for journeys via Swindon. This fare route easement applies in both directions
This is for a midweek closure of the line through Stroud, and covers all of the route codes which specify via Stonehouse, Stroud or Kemble.

The data files for these changes aren't available on opendata.nationalrail.co.uk, and I can't see any evidence of them on their journey planner, so it may take a couple of days before they start to affect what web sites do.

They aren't available in the DTD feed yet either, so journey planners won't be implementing them yet.

That was the data for that update, and there were no nasty surprises in it.

The last time I know of a delay like that was in January 2021. That was only a day, though.

New post

Some more changes to the routeing guide were published yesterday.
Changes from 01 Jun 2022 (388) to 15 Jun 2022 (389).

Permitted Route changes:
Birmingham Group (G02) to Selby (SBY) gain XL+YY+HL
This journey now has mapped routes via Pontefract.

Gilberdyke (GBD) to Pontefract Group (G22) gain HL
Hull (HUL) to Pontefract Group (G22) gain HL
Pontefract Group (G22) to Selby (SBY) gain HL
These now have mapped routes via Sherburn-in-Elmet which avoid Church Fenton.

Portsmouth Group (G23) to Southampton Group (G26) gain CW SW lose RB
This no longer has mapped routes via Basingstoke and the line through the outskirts of Salisbury (a line sometimes used by diversions).

Map changes:
HL: Gain Pontefract Group to/from Selby
This map is used in 526 routes.

This link (which wasn't previously included on any maps) allows you to travel between Pontefract Baghill and Selby via Sherburn-in-Elmet. It also permits you to catch a train which goes through Castleford and on to Selby. TPE plan to introduce a weekly train which does that, starting in August.

Easement changes:

Removed:

700992 (Fare route) Due to engineering works, on Sunday 12 June 2022, customers travelling from Ashchurch, Cheltenham Spa and Gloucester on tickets priced on (00807) VIA Stroud, (00417) AP KEMBLE NOT LONDON, (00418) AP KEMBLE SLOUGH to or via Oxford may travel may travel via Evesham. This easement applies in both directions.

700994 (Map) To mitigate early morning service changes between 30 May 2022 and 03 June 2022. This map easement will allow journeys from or via Swindon to Bath or Bristol to travel via Westbury. This map easement applies in both directions.
These are temporary easements, and the dates have now passed.

Added:

701000 (Circuitous Route) Customers on journeys from or via Ash Vale that also include travel via Farnborough Main may not travel via Woking. This circuitous route easement applies in both directions.
While the easement doesn't specify an order, Ash Vale-Woking-Farnborough (and reverse) is probably the most useful one affected by this easement. You can still change at Brookwood for this sort of journey, but that usually makes journey opportunities slower and less frequent.

As an example, the 20:25 from Exeter to London Waterloo on a weekday (which is the last train of the day on that line) connect to a London-Farnham train in Woking, but hass no connection to Ash Vale west of there.

701001 (Fare route) During engineering work diversion on Saturdays 06 August, 13 August, 03 September and 10 September 2022 tickets priced on fare route (00099) NOT VIA DARLINGTON will be valid for travel via Darlington
A line closure west of Huddersfield means the service to Middlesbrough will be reduced. This easement may reduce the inconvenience for passengers.

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

Easement 700959 (TRANSPORT FOR WALES RAIL)

701001 (Fare route) During engineering work diversion on Saturdays 06 August, 13 August, 03 September and 10 September 2022 tickets priced on fare route (00099) NOT VIA DARLINGTON will be valid for travel via Darlington
A line closure west of Huddersfield means the service to Middlesbrough will be reduced. This easement may reduce the inconvenience for passengers.

It would be helpful to me, if you could state which TOC applied the easement for the NOT via Darlington fares during this period of reduced service frequency. Thanks.

This change will cause aggravation to passengers from Alton, Farnham and Aldershot heading west. For many, many years they've changed at Woking to go to Southampton, Salisbury, Bournemouth etc and I doubt they will change their habits now.

The "old" rule as I understand it (and I don't know how it was coded in journey planners) was that these passengers were required to change at Brookwood for stations to Basingstoke, but were allowed to continue to Woking for journeys to stations west of Basingstoke. As far as I can see, no fares were being undercut by permitting this, so this change is unhelpful to say the least.

TOC most probabaly that applied for this was TPE? Although Middlesborough services showing as every 2 hours.

Agreed, just means someone from Winchester/Salisbury will need to change trains at Basingstoke to catch the stopper to Brookwood then change to an Alton train. Whereas previously they would have stayed on to Woking (assuming the train called there) changing over to an Alton train at Woking to save quite a bit of time (depending on connections).

Just means more people will ignore the railway and use a car, or will simply change at Woking with the risk of running into a RPI when changing platforms.

...who will do nothing, as almost nobody knows the minutea of the Routeing Guide on the ground, unless eticket scanners have started querying it? It's really just turned into a way of influencing what journey planners show (within reason).

I would imagine RPIs will get a brief to say tickets for stations on the Alton branch (Ash Vale etc) are not valid at Woking if from Farnborough or other stations west.

(I've seen RPIs in operation on the bridge at Woking before, checking tickets)

I don't think RPIs will get any such briefs. The level of staff information over fares and ticketing changes is generally very limited.

The bigger issue here is that reasonable and fastest routes are being barred.

I know exactly why the Ash Vale restriction has been put in but obviously won't explain more :) The only real surprise is that it's taken so many years for them to finally realise although it is a hug inconvenience.

I don't see how is it reasonable to double back between Brookwood and Woking to make a change.

Depends on railway definition of reasonable. Via Woking can reduce both journey time and number of changes/connections, especially if travelling from/to west of Basingstoke. Also when changing, Woking definitely has passenger lifts, I’m not sure that Brookwood does, which could be difficult for some people.
