... according to Secrets Of The London Underground. Wikipedia and the net in general seem to have no record of this! Is it closed permanently, or is it just a pandemic thing?

It’s in the “no plans to reopen” stage, someone FOI’d it in October last year:

”We can advise that there are no immediate plans to open this entrance,
which has been closed since 23 March 2020 at the start of the pandemic.
This is because a review is taking place to determine the long term
position for the entrance as the building is in need of improvement works
to bring it up to standard.”

I can’t see it reopening myself.

Shame -- was a v. useful quick route to the Victoria line from that neck of the woods. Plus the nostalgia aspect, of course!

The station itself although disused from December 2007 for Thameslink is still used as a staff access point for getting into the tunnels either side of it and as an Emergency Exit for any train that requires evacuation.
Prior to pandemic a concrete raft was to have been built over the site ( platforms and booking office) but as nobody wants office space anymore than plan was not progressed
The passageway from Kings Cross mainline Tube station was 'Exit Only' for many of later months before closure the requirement to gave TfL staff on the gateline (lone worker) also caused staffing issues with remoteness fro main station

I didn’t think it was as long ago as 2007 that the station closed at first but then I always remember an argument I had with a staff member at East Croydon when PAYG was first introduced on national rail, I was going to St Pancras International and argued over having to pay extra to go via London Bridge and the tube because the core was shut, and IIRC that was 2010 so the old station must have been shut by then.

Good throwback, that. I’d forgotten about the (temporary?) platforms that Thameslink used at St. Pancras during the closure; seem to recall they were over where the HS SouthEastern platforms now are?

Thameslink used platforms 8 to 13 during the blockade, which were also used by Midland Mainline.

Platforms 11, 12 and 13 were pernament construction and are largley tbe same now except they're used by South Eastern High speed.

Platforms 8, 9 and 10 were a temporary affair with a wooden platforms and concourse. When the blockade was.completed these were removed and the pernament European platforms installed.

King's Cross Thames link remained open at this time for Southboubd trains. After the blockade Kings Cross remained open as the work involved building the box but not fitting g out the station. This was completed later.

Kings Cross Thameslink closed in December 2007 and that's when the St Pancras International Low Level platforms came into use.

The temporary eastern station at St Pancras was much earlier, when the Thameslink network was severed to install the "box" for the new Low Level platforms. North side trains started/terminated at the St Pancras temporary eastern station, south side trains started/terminated at Kings Cross Thameslink. I don't have exact dates but that was around 2004.

That's the one I was remembering -- thanks! 2004/5 sounds about right.

Sounds like a good redevelopment opportunity. A significant one even, if you build over the platforms up to St Chad's. Could retain a small entrance, similar to the entrance opposite the Nike Store and future Google HQ.
