"A Chilling Tale" from "Bam! Mustaphas Play Stereo" by 3 Mustaphas 3

I can think of other words to describe it, but funny wouldn't be one of them; sorry!

I am reminded of an interview (well worth listening to) with Howard Goodall:

1:19 one of my rules about writing comedy
1:21 theme tunes is that you don't say I'm
1:24 going to write something funny because
1:26 you know there aren't many things in
1:28 music that actually are funny
And that's very true.

I guess the question here is not whether the music is funny (as music really isn't) but whether the lyrics (and associated music video, if applicable) are funny. That is, of course, highly subjective.

But to answer the question, the answer surely has to be one of Weird Al Yankovic's parodies, though I've no idea which one I'd choose!

Impressively his work spans several decades; he's been performing since many of us were born and yet he is still relevant today.

Those who come from a computer background may like It's all about the Pentiums, but that would be meaningless to some people! Fans of the 80s may nominate Fat. Youngsters may prefer his more modern stuff such as Tacky or Perform this Way, while anyone who appreciates the intricacies of the English language may prefer Word Crimes.

Music can be funny. The BOING in the last second of Hunters And Collectors by Can still gets me every time, and I used to have it as my Windows boot-up/boot-down sound, so God knows how many times I've heard it.

Not a song, but a recording very suitable for this forum is Trains by Reginald Gardiner.

Is the piece of tin still in Snow Hill tunnel?

Continuing with the theme of trains but maybe pushing the definition a bit, I would give an honourable mention to the original Thomas The Tank Engine theme when remixed with The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Mr Murray - Down came the rain
Napoleon XIV - They're coming to take me away

The B side of the Napoleon XIV record was the A side completely backwards.

Guns Don't Kill People (Rappers Do) by the Goldie Lookin' Chain.

Has the classic line: Guns don't kill people, rappers do, I saw the documentary on BBC Two.

Anything by Monty Python; the lumberjack song obviously but ‘Eric the half a bee’ and ‘I bet you they won’t play this song on the radio’ spring to mind.

Spitting Image series 2 had a song called
I have never met a nice South African

A South African I worked with (who has lived in UK for few years) thought it was hilarious as it pokes fun at apartheid era.

IIRC that was the B-side to "The Chicken Song". I briefly worked with an Afrikaaner years ago, I don't think he'd have seen the funny side as practically every other sentence included some complaint about "k****rs".

On a lighter note (but only just ;) ) a relatively unknown band I'm a big fan of is Silver Jews, which was a group led by the late David Berman. His songs could easily qualify for the "Depressing Songs" thread or indeed the "Happy Songs" thread- sometimes with the same song! They're relevant to this thread because the way he struck this balance between happy and sad was through a brilliant (IMO) use of "gallows humour". Whilst not intended primarily for humour like some of the songs listed above, the lyrical wordplay and wit of songs like "San Francisco B.C." and "How Can I Love You If You Won't Lie Down?" never fail to put a smile on my face. Musically I'd describe them as "Leonard Cohen, but filtered through the best bits of Country & Western, with a dash of US 90s alt-rock".

Sadly, David Berman took his own life in August 2019, days after releasing a new LP under the name "Purple Mountains". That one can only sit in the "depressing" thread unfortunately.

Jilted John...gordon is a moron.

I was so upset I cried all the way to the chip shop.

I find "Give Booze A Chance" by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band to be amusing, but I suspect any mickey take of Lennon & Ono these days would be straight over the head of people who were not listening to music in 1970.

The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band's "The Intro & The Outro" always raises a smile... particularly the "J Arthur Rank... on gong!" line at the end.

Doc Cox's alias Ivor ______ springs to mind ... not the obvious and most sort of famous song , but some stuff from his albums really cracked me up! -I bought a CD compilation about 15 years ago.
It was very underground in the 80's, I bet he was still on 'That's Life' then. Still tours in pubs these days I believe.
