ASLEF members at eight train companies have voted overwhelmingly for strike action in a dispute over pay.
Strikes are always the last resort,’ said Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers’ union. ‘We don’t want to inconvenience passengers – our friends and families use public transport, too – and we don’t want to lose money by going on strike but we’ve been forced into this position by the companies driven by the government.

I can't remember the threshold numbers. I'm guessing that is a vote for strike for all of them.

Should usually be announced over the next few days but will need to give a fortnights notice.
I go to London early august so I’m hoping it’s not that date. No doubt any alternative routes would be very busy?

I would expect them to centre around Saturdays or other special event days when travel is at its busiest. Commonwealth games travel is a possibility.

On the same day that Scotrail drivers accepted a 5% deal (some of which appears to involve changes to conditions).
Not too bad ones though I think & increased bonus payments if revenue targets are met. That’s unusual for drivers to have any link with revenue.

And the BBC now reporting it’s a train drivers strike by ASLEF whilst showing footage of a conductor selling tickets. Oh dear oh dear.

Website news story has the correct image. Too busy with the cricket on to watch the news on TV.

Except that some of the offer has to be funded from savings within Scotrail.

But that's not a change to terms and conditions. In reality our pay rise is being wholly funded by Transport Scotland as it is them that provide the funding to ScotRail. Just clever wording of the deal to make it look as if they are only funding 2.2% of it.

Exactly. Wouldn’t have been accepted otherwise. Also only need to talk about Sundays in the working week with an aim to have it in place by 2027. A lot can happen in those five years so no pressure on that point either.

So people will no longer be able to claim that the claims about high train driver salaries (from both the media and politicians) aren't relevant. I wonder if it will take the focus away from the RMT's claim that they have low paid members who are struggling to make a living?

If most train drivers of ASLEF, I can't see many trains if any operating on strike days for these TOCs.

You can't use agency staff for train drivers!

Silly comment really, with aslef it's about pay. RMT are trying to secure their job positions and pay.
Honestly the amount you posted in the other thread and you still have no clue its shocking.

Well maybe that's the benchmark that will get them back to the table although I wouldn't put it past Shapps to go out with a bang and provoke a summer of discontent now.

I personally think it'd be a good idea for ASLEF to sit on these results for a bit rather than announce strike dates straight away. It gives the new government an opportunity to negotiate in good faith, if that fails then it might be an idea to take action.

The existing government has said that there will be no policy changes, nonetheless it'd be a good idea for the unions to keep a close eye out for any attempt to change the laws around employment and industrial action.

So from a layman's perspective, what is the issue regarding pay for ASLEF members? What is it about the pay they are not happy about?
Not had a pay rise since 2019 at many. During Covid it was understood but nothing this year either is unacceptable.
