So, still no date to get any of these into service - not even on the Conwy Valley line or the short hop between Chester & Liverpool. How many 197’s are now stored in various sidings all over the place - including the MOD place in the heart of England? I would have thought that following the destruction of a four coach 150 at Craven Arms due to hitting a digger left on the tracks by yobs, that the need to get some 197’s into service was more pressing than ever.
There’s very specific testing and milestones to be completed and achieved, and then staff training that has to be done.

That has to take its course, and I don’t think that expecting it to be done any faster is realistic.

The CAF logo has gone up at Chester depot, replacing Alstom.
That should mean something, I suppose.

These units were needed several years ago - the loss of the 150s only makes it even worse. However......

..... This is exactly the issue. I'm not sure why people think TfW would be any happier than anyone else is at the ongoing delays; they want these units in service ASAP.

It does but it's not really news - CAF were always meant to be taking over the depot, and that has gone ahead. They are also taking over maintenance of the 175s at least in the short term.

Nice vid from "Glovestrains" on Youtube about the new stock from a preview day. They look quite nice.

Notice that the 197 runs through Crewe these days seem to be using 004 a lot. Are 001, 2 and 3 now accepted by TfW?

Does anyone know what's been happening with the 197 Cambrian Line test runs (or where 197003 went / what 197 - if any - is on the line)? Since I missed 197003 across the road from me in the early hours of the 28/5/22, as someone whose local is Aberystwyth, I've been trying to look out (on OTT's live map of the line) on many different nights, but all I saw for about a week was it running between Machynlleth and Welshpool/Shrewsbury, and then nothing since then, including in most of July, which I thought that article said more testing on the line would take place in. If anyone could give me information it would be much appreciated.

I think Cambrian testing when it happens, usually late at night. Line is placed into engineering block that allows testing to happen. Train movements will not show on OTT line map.

Hmm, I did wonder. And that's despite the train between Machynlleth and Welshpool/Shrewsbury I was referring to showing up (as 5Z97 IIRC)?

So have there been more 197 test runs on the Cambrian Line in June and July? And if so, what unit(s) has/have been used? And have any more of them been to Aberystwyth, and if so how many?

And how do I find out when there is going to be one going to Aberystwyth so I don't miss one like I did on the 28th of May? The guy who took the photo I saw somehow knew...

Or will I just have to keep going to the station at night, which, had I done that for 4 nights after I saw 197003 being delivered to Machynlleth, I would've seen it at Aberystwyth? I've been wanting to see a 197 at AYW for nearly 2 months now...

5Z97 would have been it delivered to Machynlleth. Test trains are normally 3Qxx If they rae in the system. There has been no further tests on the Cambrian thus far.

003 is so far the only set with ERTMS fitted, so the only set you're likely to see on the Cambrian.

Stored at Donnington Rail Freight Terminal are: 5x Class 197/0, 197103, 197009, 197012,197104 and 197018. Stored at Bicester MOD are: 197006,197007 and 197008. Haven't been to Donnington for a little while but that's what I have at the moment.

Anyone know when 197018 arrived?

Over the last 14 months I've now seen 8 different 197's either working on the North Wales Coast or on the Crewe - Shrewsbury line. These have been 197001, 197002, 197003, 197004, 197011, 197013, 197101 and 197102. Last night I saw 197004, 197011 and 197013 coupled together working through Chester. This is the first time I've seen 3 units coupled together. Hope this is of interest.

Are the sets that did not appear to be numbered still at Donnington?

Possibly four sets?

Just been out on a Cheshire Day Ranger. Saw 2 x 197/0s on test through Shotton. Looked nice inside, sound like a 195. Guard I’ve just spoken to said end of September for intro of 197s is the latest they’ve heard from management.

In terms of the Manchester services, which is more likely to start first at this rate; Mk4 sets to South Wales or 197s to North Wales?

Wonderful rate of progress. The 197s have really rather shown up other classes so far, including their own sister fleet of the West Midlands.

In my opinion, 197s. Purely because the Mk4s aren't meant to start until December, and I don't know whether they've yet been cleared between Shrewsbury and Crewe.

I think South Wales - Manchester/North Wales will be next year. I haven’t heard if a 197 has been between Chester and Shrewsbury via Wrexham yet.

Hopefully this should mean a solid 175 service on Manchester Milford Haven at last, with 175s taken off Llandudno Manchester allowing them to get rid of the odd 153 pair (like the one running this route today while a 175 does Liverpool shuttles!) and 158.

I think the intendion on my understanding is the 197001/02, 197004-197021 & 197101-112 are to replace everything 175 operated. The will start on the Blaenau branch and Chester-Liverpool. The 175 withdrawal will start 175 for a 197 on individual basis until 175s are all gone.

197003, 197022-197041 to replace all 158 and are ETCS fitted on the Holyhead & Aberystwyth/Pwllheli-Birmingham’s

197113-197126 3-car fitted with 1st Class to be added to South Wales-Manchester to make 5-car sets. Remaining 2-cars units 197042-051 for West Wales routes.

I believe the plan was recently changed and the 175s would be leaving later than expected now. It was mentioned upthread by @wobman I think, but I don't know for certain.

197's on North Wales - Manchester and Mk4's on South Wales - Manchester expected from Dec TT change.
Before then it'll mainly be 197's on Blaenau branch, Chester - Liverpool and I would expect Wrexham - Bidston to free up the 150's. Anything else before Dec would be a bonus. 175's will mainly be running South - North until at least mid next year. No train crew training has started in the South yet on 197s.
