I’m looking at having a day trip to London while staying at St Leonards. What are the peak time restrictions for this? (Code CDR). Is it morning only or morning and and evening? Is it different at weekends? Is it worth getting an off peak day travel card (approx £4.30 extra) for travel within London? And how does this work, is it showing the National rail ticket for travel on the underground and busses and does this cause any problems, particularly with buses?

Thanks in Advance.

P.S. what is the best station for central London Charing Cross or Victoria (or London Bridge)? Cheers.

This ticket http://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=SLQ&dest=1072&rte=130&tkt=CDR is valid at any time after 0800 with no additional return restrictions.

The cheaper super off-peak day return http://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=SLQ&dest=1072&rte=130&tkt=SRR is valid from 0930 but doesn't have a travelcard option. Still valid on all return trains.

No restrictions at the weekend.

Yes, if you are going to go anywhere beyond the area immediately beyond the London terminal stations.

Yes, the ticket has existed for over 30 years and is very common in use in London. No issues at all with buses or the underground anywhere in London.

Charing Cross is much more central than Victoria. The journey is quicker too.

It depends entirely on where you intend to visit when in London - for the Shard or Tower Bridge or the Tower of London then London Bridge is best, but if you want the West End then one of the other stations would make more sense.

There are also slightly cheaper and more restricted fares via Haywards Heath:
Off peak day return £37.70
Off peak Travelcard £42.50
Valid on trains arriving London from 09:45

Super off peak day return £21.20
Super off peak Travelcard £27.80
Valid on trains arriving London from 10:45
Not valid on trains leaving London between 16:15 and 19:15

A couple of follow up questions, if anyone is able to help.

Is the day travel card valid for travel on the Elizabeth line?

Is there a ‘small group’ ticket or similar available for the journey from st Leonard’s to London, and if so can the day travel card be added to this? (Three or Four people travelling together).

Thanks.

Yes, valid on all rail services within zones 1-6 except Heathrow Express and Southeastern High Speed services from St Pancras.

Three (or more) people can travel together with a one third discount using the groupsave discount, which applies to travelcard tickets bought outside (but not inside) London (and single / return tickets). It restricts travel to departures after 0930 though.

GroupSave is valid on…
Off-Peak Tickets
Anytime Single Tickets
Off-Peak day travel cards (bought outside of the London zones)

GroupSave discount
Terms and Conditions
GroupSave fares are based on groups of 3 to 9 people travelling together at all times and people travelling on this fare cannot split from the group to travel separately.
GroupSave is valid during Off-Peak times on: Super Off-Peak Day Singles and Returns, Off-Peak and some Anytime Tickets, where available.
Available from 09:30 Monday to Friday and at any time at weekends and Bank Holidays.
Kids for a Quid Tickets can be combined with GroupSave. Adults travelling as part of a GroupSave party can purchase up to four Kids for a Quid Tickets each for the children in their party.
GroupSave is valid on Off-Peak Day Travelcards for travel only from stations outside of the London area (not for purchase in the London Fares Zones 1-6).
GroupSave is valid on Off-Peak Returns for return within one calendar month, where available.
Discounts apply to listed ticket types only and cannot be secured in conjunction with any other offers. GroupSave cannot be used with Railcards, any other Train Operating Company special offers, train or bus travel connecting river or sea routes.
GroupSave is available for Standard Class travel only.

If you are travelling up from the East Sussex Coast you have a choice of Victoria, Charing Cross (trafalgar Square) , Waterloo, Waterloo East (soutbank London Eye) Vauxhall, Blackfriars, City Thameslink (St Paul's) Canon St (the City) & London Bridge (Tower of London) on a London Terminals Ticket so you may not need a Travelcard. If you want to go to North or East London (Stratford for Westfield Stratford City, West Ham) its easier to get the train to Ashford Int and HS1 to Stratford or St Pancras although you pay the plus HS1 premium on this route.

Thanks for all the great replies.

Just one further question, is there any station nearer London with park and ride facilities (and likely to have spaces available) so we could drive ‘half way’ then get the train in the rest of the way?

Cheers.

Tonbridge and Sevenoaks are both near the A21 which is your main road from St Leonards. I wouldn't expect either to be full at the moment. Tonbridge has additional parking at the Angel Centre should the station one be full.

If you want to drive part way you have several options:
Tonbridge, leave a21 at a26 turning and head for Tonbridge Station. There's an independent operator Green Parking who charges £2.50 up to 23.59 on Saturdays in Priory Street. It's about 5 mins walk from the station.
I wouldn't bother with Sevenoaks.
In the zones are Orpington Zone 6
Junction 4 of the M25 and Swanley a pseudo zone 9 at junction 3 both railway car parks will have room at about £6ish. If you want to hit the Underground North Greenwich is up the M25 to Junction 2 then up the A2 toward the Blackwall Tunnel there's loads of ncp parking there in the region of £11 a day.
