A sympathetic driver would use notch 4 to get the better acceleration up to just over 40mph and then return to notch 3 before weak field cut in. Once the train's speed got over 45mph you'd take notch 4 again and all the units would smoothly weak field at the same time.
The controller position had no direct control over the unit's power output. Selecting notch 4 from a stand merely allowed the camshaft to rotate as soon as the CLR triggered it, rather staying in a set motor configuration such as Series or Notch 2 beyond the normal setup point.Being in notch 4 upto 40mph would mean nothing as the control system still work through the camshaft positions as normal.

Notch 4 ( Weak Field ) activates B-Coil allowing 800A per motor as the camshaft/ contactors run up compared to
400A/Motor for 1,2 and 3

Twenty two 18xx series 4CIGs were altered, to emerge as the 13xx 'greyhound' sub-class, modified for enchanced performance. They were joined by the similarly echanced 4BEP units (23xx) for operation on Pourtsmouth (and Bournemouth) services. :)

Twenty two 18xx series 4CIGs were altered, to emerge as the 13xx 'greyhound' sub-class, modified for enchanced performance. They were joined by the similarly echanced 4BEP units (23xx) for operation on Pourtsmouth (and Bournemouth) services. :)

Plus 1392 to 1399?

South West Trains inherited a small fleet of twelve 'Phase 2' 4Cig units, and the larger fleet of 22 "Greyhound" units which had been modified to allow faster acceleration.

In 1997 the fleet was augmented with the addition of eight 4Big units from Connex South Central. These operated with the counter in the buffet carriages locked out of use. By 1999 these units had been stored, but then eight additional "Greyhound" units were converted from the redundant 4Bigs. The units were reclassified as Class 421/8, and renumbered in the range 1392–1399. The modifications included the removal of the buffet carriages, which were replaced by spare intermediate trailers from 4Cep units. Most of these trailers came from 4Cep units to make 3Cep units, but a few came from withdrawn units. These trailers were immediately recognisable since although they had the same body profile as the rest of the unit the windows were different and they had InterCity70 seating. The buffet carriages were withdrawn, although many were saved for preservation.
