It is possible to reverse just after the ECML and access North Gate, and there are indeed Lincoln - Nottingham trains which call at both Newark stations on Sundays!

I know that the last train to Lincoln every day calls at both Newark stations.

Newark Castle to Newark North Gate requires a substantial trip

Newark Castle --> Lincoln --> Retford --> Newark North Gate

Or Newark Castle --> Nottingham --> Grantham --> Newark North Gate

Doesnt one of the trains on that route back up along the ECML to the other station? I know ive been through both (northgate and castle) on the lincoln => nottingham route

The 05.26 from Lincoln (Destination: Nottingham) does calling at Newark Northgate (05.56) and Newark Castle (06.10).

At home or at the pub
St Helens Central-St Helens Junction via Huyton, or via Wigan[using Parkside Junction i think].
Another way from Liverpool Lime Street to Liverpool Central via Hunts Cross.
Blackpool South to Blackpool North.

And the 2225 from Nottingham calls at Castle at 2256 and Northgate at 2305.

At quite a few times of day you only need to go to Collingham and back to get between the two which is rather quicker than Nottingham and Grantham.

I don't know if it's been said yet, but what of the Bromley stations?

Or does that count as London? Or has it already been said?

...

Oh dear. Sorry :(

The old Southern must be a gold mine for this sort of thing; you have Dorking, Bromley, Canterbury, Edenbridge, Maidstone, Farnborough and, previously, Bournemouth. And then I've probably missed some!

Glasgow Queen Street to Glasgow Central?

Via Partick would the shortest route by train.

Queen St high level to Central high level
queen st -springburn - sunnyside curve - whifflet (reverse) - rutherglen - central

Paisley Canal - Paisley Gilmour St - via Glasgow Central

Larbert - Falkirk High (ir one accepts that Larbert is in Falkirk)
via Croy or Polmont

How about Burscough Junction to Burscough Bridge?

You can go:

Burscough Junction - Ormskirk - Sandhills - Southport - Burscough Bridge

OR

Burscough Junction - Ormskirk - Kirkdale - Kirkby - Wigan Wallgate - Burscough Bridge

In the past (before Bletchley trains were diverted) Bedford Midland Road and St Johns. Via Wellingborough/Northampton, probably.

as an aside:

thirty five minutes after boarding the train at Bletchley, Jericho disembarked at Bedford, bought a one way ticket to London...
(and got an express to St Pancras) (Enigma, Robert Harris)

Is this National Rail only? How about Newcastle central - St. James' on T&W Metro?

Surely that can be done fairly quickly with a change at Monument? You *can* go a much longer way round but you don't have to. Otherwise you'd include loads of circle lines and just go the wrong way round.

Yeovil Junction - Yeovil Pen Mill
(change at Salisbury and Westbury, journey time with changes is 2 hours and 47 minutes  )
(and National Rail / Trainline won't give tickets/times for the journey)

EDIT: Not sure whether Yeovil Junction is allowed as 'Yeovil' or not... technically it is but geographically its nearest village is Stoford.

Blackpool North - Blackpool South
(change at Kirkham and Wesham - journey time c. 1 hour)

St Budeaux Victoria Road - St Budeaux Ferry Road (or vice versa)
(only 1 direct train per day - journey time 20 mins, otherwise 29 mins with 1 change 1 per day, 54 minutes with 1 change 1 per day, or 2 hours with 1 change 1 per day)
