If it's a day return you have to return the same day as the outward journey.

However you can ask the ticket office or a conductor to excess your time ticket to an off-peak open return for the difference in price.

I doubt you did as there is no day return for this journey :)

An Off-Peak Return (no "Day"), priced £70.00 with no Railcard, is valid to return within a month (look at the "valid until" date on the return ticket).

Are you sure that you have an off peak day return as avantix doesn't show any for the journey Manchester Picadilly - London Euston. If you actually hold a off peak return then the return portion of that is valid for up to a month.

Can Tommy67 advise how much was paid for the ticket, whether there is any railcard discount, and whether there are any compulsory seat reservations for the Southbound (outward) leg, or indeed for the return journey?

Mcr Warrior brings up a good point - there are day returns available, in the form of the Virgin Day Travelcard. (More VT complification of the fares system :() These I imagine are non-excessible being both TOC-specific and sort-of AP fares, though helpfully no T&Cs to be found.

I thought that the Virgin-specific day travelcards existed pre-complification. They were just known by a different name, Saturday Day Out iirc.
