£4 single :) - no other way of beating that apart from Oyster

(Youd be better off getting an Oyster card to be honest Tom if you're ever going to enter London again! The expensive cash fares make Oyster more attractive even for the occasional visitor, which was TFL's idea for it :) )

No you can't get it cheaper than £4 unless you have a Railcard or are under 16.

The SDS from somewhere like South Hampstead to somewhere like Battersea Park (routed +Any Permitted, so including one cross-London transfer) is £5.00 adult so is more expensive than a LU single, but £3.30 with a Railcard which is cheaper. A return with a Railcard is better value at £5.30, but still not as good value as Oyster.

There are certain machines that give you £2 credit when you get an Oyster card for £5. They are the blue Oyster only machines, they have them at the sub-surface ticket hall at King's Cross St Pancras, not sure if they have them at Euston (or Euston Square). Otherwise it's £5 just for the card elsewhere. The money is refundable but you are best of having one if you visit London even only occasionally.

If you are under 16 then you can get an off-peak Travelcard for only £3, and it can be used on any bus/tram/DLR/rail service within the Greater London area.

If it's of any use, the 73 bus goes to Victoria every 6 minutes. £2.20 cash fare. Takes about 40 minutes.

Possibly with Yorkie's idea - depends if Groupsave is available on that flow :) (not got NFM available at the moment so cant check which TOC prices the ticket - have a feeling it may be TfL being completely inside the London Zones?)

You can check GroupSave availability with any thetrainline-powered site.

To be perfectly honest, as much as I enjoy the railways and wish to contribute to their funding, at the same time i'm not getting ripped off for not having an Oyster.

As long as Beardy Branson gets me there on time, we have an hour to get to Victoria.

I'd be careful if you DO choose to bus it, I've been caught out with a 55min connection on the 73 from Kings X to Victoria :)

(Just out of interest, why the reluctance to get an Oyster card? :) )

There is a blue Oyster machine at Euston, just next to the sub-surface ticket windows.

Although Oyster is considered to be the cheapest option for everyone, Yorkie, I'm not so certain when we go to London as a family (2 Adults and 2 Children 11-16).

With a Family Railcard, a Travelcard for Zones 1-6 (which we always need - we stay in the Travelodge in Croydon a lot), costs £5.30 for adults and £2 for children - total price: £14.60. We do a lot of travelling, so make good use of the Travelcards! Do you think Oyster would be cheaper in this scenario?

As I've mentioned to you previously, I am getting myself a Zip card. Originally, I thought of using it only when I visit London by myself. The Off-Peak price cap of £1.30 is significantly less than a Travelcard, at £3.

But don't tell me, I've already thought of this! When we go as a family, buy Travelcards for 2 Adults @ £5.30 and 1 Child @ £2, plus me using my Zip card @ £1.30, saving a further 70p. Total price: £13.90. What a bargain!

Still, could using Oyster cards for all of us be cheaper, more expensive(!), or just the same?

EDIT: I didn't know the blue Oyster machines gave £2 credit. Thanks for that! (I still think £5 for an Oyster card is a bit steep. I paid £10 for my Zip card!)

well there doesn't seem to be any way to avoid a big hefty fare

I either bus it, missing my connection and having to repurchase.
I buy stupidly expensive tube tickets and I have to return three days later.

Silly, silly system.

Don't remind me about London buses! The traffic can be horrendous!

Last month, on a Saturday, we needed to travel as a family from Clapham Junction to Shepherd's Bush (for Westfield). It should have taken about 15 minutes by train - instead, it took over an hour! And we were standing the whole time! <(

Why close the Overground on a Saturday!? Why!!? You have so many shoppers wanting to get to Westfield!!!

I wrote a stern letter of complaint to London Overground, posing as an annoyed tourist (!) - which I was in a sense - whose day trip had been partly wasted, and surprisingly for TfL, I actually got some compensation! :D

I would also mention that the Victoria line was also closed, so continuing to Vauxhall, taking the Victoria line to Oxford Circus and then the Central Line to Shepherd's Bush still wouldn't have been an option.

I realised later that I should have gone from Norbiton (there is a nice sushi shop at Norbiton) to Wimbledon, taking the District line to Earls Court, then the District line to Hammersmith, and then the H&C line to Wood Lane (!) (Circle line was closed), or gone from Norbiton to Richmond, taking the District line to Hammersmith, and then the H&C line to Wood Lane. Both of these options are horrendously lengthy, and then again, I heard that there were problems on the District line too!

Beardy would have sold you a ticket through to zone 1 for an extra £3 per adult each way.

The Oyster daily cap is the same amount as a one day travelcard

Will Beardy still sell me this on board?

I'm going to ask the guard what are my options whilst on the Pendolino, see what he says.

You could get the Oyster cards and get them refunded at Victoria...

There is a way to avoid the stupidly expensive tube tickets - get an Oyster. Please can you explain why you are so against the idea.

Whenever I travel to London I order a zones 1 to 4 travelcard when buying tickts online, mainly because I don't really understand how Oyster works. I know what I get with a travelcard, know where I can and can't use it and as it's prepaid I don't have to worry about whether to touch in or not.

I'm not against Oyster- it's just for my four friends who rarely go to London- and if they do their family takes the car. Why all the hassle just to get such a short distance.

Why didn't you get a through ticket? I don't know your exact journey so it's difficult to advise. We are only being asked about a Euston-Victoria journey, which most people would be doing as part of a longer rail journey so would have tickets which would include it. If you just want to do that journey, try seeing if GroupSave is available and if not, just get a taxi or 5 x £4 singles. (If the taxi gets stuck in traffic, say "here will do" and pay up there and then, as 'Delay Repay' on taxis works the other way, the customer pays the provider!! Good job the TOCs don't do it that way round ;))

I doubt it - it's one ticket, from your starting point to London zone 1 rather than Euston, not a separate underground one

But wrth asking

It's only £4. Deal with it.

Goodness me. For another quid you could have got an Oyster, made the trip and had 10p + £3 deposit left. Either cash that in, or keep it for next time when you'll only have to add £1.80 rather than another £4. Make two trips without handing the card back: Oyster £6.80, cash £8.00.

Now i fully admit cash fares on the underground are rediculously expensive, but you were given ways of avoiding that. Get an Oyster, then hand it back afterwards and get your deposit back. You save yourself over £2 each per single journey.
