I've just worked out the following for diesel unit orders (there may be marginal errors):

Between 1979 and 1997 a total of 1555 diesel / diesel-electric carriages were ordered, which averages 86.39 per year.

Between 1997 and 2010 a total of 1298 diesel / diesel-electric carriages were ordered, which averages 99.85 per year.

I haven't got time to do the same with electric carriages but if anyone wants to work it out they're more than welcome.

Interesting figures, just to check does ordered also mean delivered? So the 1555 orders were/are all in service and same with the 1298 orders?

1979-97 involved increased electrification of the network as well though. So less diesel stock may have been required.

Also newer is only of benefit if increasing services. 79-97 included 2 recessions; 97 onwards has beena period of economic growth so services shoiuld be growing and requiring new stock.

Yes I've excluded things like the prototype 151s and included units that were written off like the 142 that a HST killed in Winsford.

In many cases under the previous Conservative government I thought electrification schemes would have involved a lot more changing a diesel loco for an electric one opposed to a new order.

There was a comparison in RAIL a few months back, basically we have nearly exactly the same amount of EMU and DMU today that we had 30 years ago, but they are running 1/3rd more hours.

Any new train orders figures politicians annouce should be taken with a pinch of salt, no matter which party.

Not one figure announced has been met since privatisation.

Don't forget we had an economic crisis in 2008 which led us in to recession in 2009 but that didn't stop the 172 and 380 orders going ahead.
