At least he's smart enough to have learnt his lesson, hopefully. By the sound of it, it's amazing that he's even alive at all.

stupid man, hopefully some people may be turned off by this, maybe network rail should use this as part of nationwide tv campaign.

I dont care if its quite graphic, it will grab people attention same with the level crossing advert

Shocking turn of events for that man.

But is his own fault for trying to steal the cables.

He got what he deserved. No-one's volt but his own.

Agree with Anthony263 - Maybe using the pic as part of an ad. campaign might make a little difference...

I see this happened at an electricity sub-station. These premises have norices affixed warning of DANGERS OF DEATH. I see that the report mention 21,000 volts.

This is one individual who has received a far bigger punishment than he would have been handed by the courts, as the electric shock blew part of his skull off, exposing the brain.

I'm glad that he appeared to show remorse and deep regret for what he had done. Hopefully, this will serve as a lesson to those tempted to do the same thing. Playing with the railway is like playing with fire.

I bet he didn't go OHM for a while after that.

A van de graff generator that kids use in school to make their hair stand on end generates 50,000 volts. It's the current (measured in amps) that does you harm

He's expressing sorrow and remorse for being caught and suffering injuries. If he hadn't got hurt, he'd have done it again and again.

I don't believe it exposed his brain, I don't believe he has one.

I think he's paid the best price possible; better than any court can give. His injuries will be with him for the rest of his life, as a horrific reminder.

Considering the injuries, how did he not die?

That would've been a more deserving punishment which could've been distributed around the country, "mess around with railway cable and your head gets blown off"

It was a joke; that Strange6 was trying to become the Pedant in residence :)

Wow, we've gone off topic here!

Ah, I see. I'm sure your title is safe for now! :)

And indeed, we've gone off topic big time! It's only a matter of minutes before I'm clearing the 'Post Deleted' messages from my Inbox.....

A single voltage source won't have a fixed current. There will probably have a maximum current that the source can physically give, but amount of current is still determined by the load applied (ie, how much resistance there is in the ciruit). The less resistance you have, the more current you allow to flow, as long as the voltage you're connecting to is constant (which it pretty much is). Depending on how you connect yourself in the circuit, the human body can have a resistance as low as 1 Ohm, which means for every 1 Volt of voltage, 1 Amp of current would flow. 1A is more than enough to kill someone.

To all copper fairies out there: Good luck in stealing 25kV cables! :p

From the way that this was going, you would definately had our moderators ready to pounce on both of you.

Beware of the posting warnings...the moderators have now closed both the thread on the admin forum and the NR general discussion forum as retribution.

I wouldn't have posted anything as people had gone back on topic, but since you decided to give a "summary" of what's been going on, can we please keep on topic please!

Last night, I was reading about cable theft in the RAIL magazine. There was a table showing the amount of thefts in the last three years, with the costs, delay minutes and arrests that resulted. I don't have it with me now but I'll try and post it a little bit later when I get home. The amount of thefts have soared considerably. It was apparently the worst in Scotland, with lots of incidents, but remarkably low conviction numbers.

I'm not surprised at at the low conviction numbers considering that a lot of these thefts occur out in the countryside or in areas of low population. Very easy to attempt on the railway network!

There was an item on the television about the use of a very small helicopter, known as a microcopter, not much larger than a model one. It is fitted with high quality cameras and flies at a height of 350 feet and the images shown that were taken were extremely clear. The machine has the ability to spray a "special" clear liquid on the theives, that can be used to identify them.
