I believe that the 18:49 Brighton (BTN) - London Victoria (VIC) is operated by 2 x Class 442 units; can anyone confirm this? Also is the 19:19 BTN - VIC also formed of Class 442s? (If not, what is it formed of?)

Also where are bikes stored in 442s, and how many can you store per 5-car train? (presumably this is doubled for a 10-car set)

Thanks in advance :)

If you don't mind me posting in this thread, rather than digging up an old thread or starting a new one.

I'm planning on taking a trip down to Brighton on a Saturday soon.

Which Saturday services are 442's used on now? Have they taken over completely from 377's yet? I wouldn't want to book a return journey(to get the best price), only to find that it's onboard a boring 377!

I also have a 442 question :p

The slide down windows near the ends of the passenger accommodation, would I be alright opening it and sticking my head out? (When the train is stationary ofcourse.)

I'm not sure what bike space is like on the 442s now (it used to be somewhere around 5 per unit?). It wouldn't suprise me if they stripped most of it out when they refurbished the units.

No, the vestibule windows are locked with a t-key. The only window passengers may open are the two droplights by the guards compartment.

Do 442s run out of Victoria on the faster services on Sundays?

I believe they are booked to run the xx02 VIC - BTN and xx34 BTN - VIC services on Sundays.

The 2136 from Victoria was 2x442 last night. If the express diagrams haven't changed, the same units should have worked the following:

From Victoria at 0906, 1136, 1406, 1636, 1906.
From Brighton at 0749, 1019, 1249, 1519, 1749, 2019.

I was at Clapham Junc and saw the Cl 442s on Southern services. How long has this been going on? Sorry for asking daft question. I very rarely go to London.

Thanks.

Two things:

Firstly, if they're exactly as they were when SWT had them they won't open far enough to do that and secondly you'd need a carriage key to open them anyway.

If it's the same as when they were with SWT, then it's five per unit, all stored in the Guards compartment. There was a rack that held the bikes, with the front wheels up towards the ceiling and if I recall the handle bars across hooks.

Are the 442's working on all Brighton Express services now, i see on the Brighton mainline timetable that certain services are not suitable for mobility services.

Does this mean these trains are (or at least scheduled to be) Class 442's

Correct. Every chance of a 377 for various reasons, especially on Saturdays, but they are scheduled to be 442s.

Generally there are more 377s on the expresses on Saturday's as vic men work a few of them and they don't sign 442s yet. During the week a lot of 442s run the BXP as it's mainly Selhurst and Brighton drivers who do sign them. I think most semi-fast brightens are still 377s.

Bikes on a 442.... Whats stupid is the guards area is meant to remain locked when not in-use by staff, as well as the 2 slam doors. So its not even possible to get bikes in there :D

The guard's space wasn't locked when the units were used by SWT: don't know whether that's changed under Southern.

He is a Southern guard, so I would guess it has changed since they have changed hands :)
