We all have a line we would love to have seen preserved. What would yours have been and if we could have save 1 engine to run on it what would it have been?

My chose would have been the Kidlington to Woodstock line and engine of cause the 0-4-2t 517 class 'Fair Rosamont'.

:D

I'd of got the North Woolwich to Stratford line preserved after the NLL stopped running over it. Reason being because it is in London, would of made it hugely successful.

I'd take a Tilbury Tank 4-4-2T 2P for that :D

Or it would have got vandalised to hell!

There's three existing projects that I would love to see progress more than they are ever likely to be able to:

Lynton & Barnstaple
Corris
Wensleyday reopened through to Garsdale.

I've been involved in preservation too long to do "fantasy locos" - I don't care what it is, as long as it is steam and does the job! I'll take a Black 5, S15 or Bulleid anywhere (standard guage).

Other than Woodhead; Morecambe to Ingleton would get my vote. Not a big steam fan so don't mind the traction, but would like to have seen more diesel classes saved, Blue Pullman too.

Having been a regular traveller on the line before it closed in the 1960’s, my vote goes to the Steyning Line in West Sussex. With main line connections at both ends, a scenic view and stations at villages with good pubs, what more could you ask for?

Fantasy... Well this is stretching the limits. How about a completely new line from Ludlow to Stratford-Upon-Avon via Droitwich Spa that is heritage. It would use a variety of 1st gen DMUs and some 2nd gen when the time comes; also with a nice selection of GWR Steam Locomotives. I have made a map for it here (it isn't finished as you can see!)

No longer here
I think I would go for Leighton Buzzard to Dunstable operated by a bubble car, or the Woodhead Route.

The ex-NLL from Stratford to North Woolwich is a fascinating line, as was the Silvertown Tramway.

Hmm, well, I like the idea of Cambridge-Sandy, mostly because it's very near where I live, so I could volunteer without having to travel for miles. Running on it, a Claud-Hamilton with a Quad-art or a rake of Gresley coaches and a Baby Deltic with MkIs, perhaps an O2 as well, with visits from the N2 and B12/3. Not the original traction, but close enough to the ECML that they might count. The LMS should be represented as well, since they were the real owners, but I have no idea what worked the Varsity Line, although visiting Black 5s will be very welcome, and a preserved Class 3 tank would be nice as well.

In fact, let's have an N7, a 61XX and a Southern M7. Call it the Suburban Steam Museum.

I Thought there was talk of that line being preserved, is it still on the cards does any one know?

I Also heard the the Glos/Warwick Rly have been talking about extending their line towards Stratford fro Cheltenham, I Understand there has been a little extention opened on that route already in the last year or two, but I also understand that they are also having problems with an embankment, meaning that through trains on their exsiting line are curtailed

Hmmm...out of sheer fantasy, how about the East Coast Main Line, preserved and served by a fleet of Streaks?

You did say fantasy!

M

That would be truley wonderful. (I saw that a steam charter from KX to York was cancelled at the last minute this week owing to no paths being available.

Well that really would be a wonderful line connecting several beautiful places.

As I have a dear friend living in Ledbury, makes it even more attractive.

Ledbury Ludlow could even get a direct London service ;)

I'd like to see the East Lancashire Railway get a good long extension north and south as well as finally get a platform at Castleton to connect to the Rail Network.

From what I hear the plans on the Castleton station are moving on quite well but given it took how many years for the extension to Heywood it may be some time yet.

Perhaps some seriously high fencing around the park between Heywood and Bury to stop kids pelting trains with rocks (because one day I'm going to jump out and get 'em)

The Chiltern mainline after HS2 takes all the valuable passengers away...

Yes that would be a good one.

Yes, the ELR is a good candidate, & it would be good to connect at Castleton. I have been on the train and it was hit by stones and an egg by the little G@@s. The guard was very forthright about what he'd like to do with them. I think most of the pssengers agreed with him.

It would have to be better than that because I always try to avoid London. My current trip is FGW’s Brighton – Gt. Malvern, then LM’s Brum - Hereford to Ledbury.

So my fantasy is steam hauled comfortable coaches (including RMB) Brighton to Hereford via Worcester, with several stops including Ledbury.

Oops, I just realised I meant Ludlow, not Ledbury!

The Bishops Castle branch from Craven Arms (funny how so much of this topic has been looking at the south Shropshire area!) but with the never fulfilled extension to Montgomery.

And to go with the 'possible extensions of existing lines' idea- extend the Llangollen Railway not just to Corwen but to both Ruabon and Morfa Mawddach.

Join it up with my one!! :D

Also to add to my list: extend the SVR upto Shrewsbury.

Since were well on the way to a nice big preserved rail network, I would also re-open the lines from Bewdley to Stourport and Bewdley to Tenbury Wells, the latter would of course be a junction station with Class172's Stratford to Ludlow line

How lovely. Then we can reopen the line from Reddich to Ashchurch, and also Malvern Wells-Ashchurch. :)

The line I always wished I had seen open was the Malton & Driffield Railway which luckily is currently the subject of a plan to reopen it
http://www.yorkshirewoldsrailway.org.uk/

My "fantasy lines" would be either the Stainmore Railway or the Scarborough & Whitby - the latter would , if it had been preserved, be possibly the best in the country, with fabulous scenery and linking three holiday resorts - Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough. I bet the trains would be full and standing.

And let's build a replica a B17 to go with them. Full LNER livery, with regular runs by as many Gresley coaches as we can scrape together.

Very true about the Whitby - Scarborough line. However, if the potash scheme comes to anything, then there is the possibility of at least some of it being reopened.

Back to the subject, I'm slightly surprise that there has never been a proposal to reopen part of the Leek & Manifold. A line that was almost built to be a "preserved railway"!

The 3ft gauge Southwold Railway in Suffolk, that closed in 1929 (I think).
The Southwold came close to becoming Britain's first heritage railway, two decades before the Talyllyn, but sadly the attempt to save it failed. However It survived for a long time as an abandoned railway, complete with track, coaches and locos rusting/rotting away in situ.

Someone's having a go at that one - http://www.southwoldrailway.co.uk/index.php

From what I've read, they have encountered significant problems with planning, NIMBY's, etc.
