Well, not entirely.....

The BBC have agreed a deal to show HALF the F1 races from 2012 to 2018 (including British and Monaco GPs) with Sky showing EVERY race during that time.

Welcome to the pay per view era!

Terrible news - looks like the in-race ads are back for half the races then! (Lets be honest, no-ones going to watch Sky when the BBC are broadcasting the race live)

On the plus side, I refuse to get a Sky subscription, so looks like I have an excuse to go to the pub every Sunday afternoon where a race isnt on the BBC :P

I refuse to have anything whatsoever to do with SKY, so I am glad that I am not ploughing a lone furrow. You deserve to be a moderator for your strength of conviction on this matter :p

At least BBC never did what ITV did once and missed the last few laps of a race because they were showing adverts!!<(

I for one will not be subscribing to Sky Sports just to watch half the F1 races. Well done F1:roll:

A very bad decision. It certainly won't persuade me to get Sky. I'm currently listening to Test Match Special, which is not as good as live television, but means that I don't have to pay Sky anything. Radio 5 will be nowhere near as good, but is better than nothing, and at least we still have half the races. I hope we still get Belgium and Italy!

If the British audience collapses, this might cause the British Grand Prix to go the way of the French. There's a petition out against this somewhere, but no chance of this succeeding.

But Test Match Special is 100% BETTER than Sky!

What is the highest audience on sky, from what I understand they never get more than 1M people watching an event, I am not aware of 10M - but hey they would complain they never get the likes of the world cup final.

Sports like cricket may have more money as a result of sky, but also less interest as no-one see them and think I want to play cricket!

Agreed there (I used to have TMS on with the Channel 4 pictures). F1 doesn't translate so well onto the radio, the pace is wrong, but I will still do my best to listen to it.

I used to watch the races with 5 live on, because it was far better than listening to Legard. Its the same commentary you get if you watch the practice sessions on Red Button (Chandhok is a very good summariser/co-commentator when he's on.). Unfortunateky most of the races are shifted onto 5 Live sports Extra so I can't listen when in the car !!!

I'm delighted as I hate the thing, but I do feel for those who enjoy it as it is. The LES tonight had a writer who reckoned that Sky bagging Wimbledon etc isn't too far away. If MotD goes, then I'll be unhappy!

This is terrible news, but the BBC seemed to spin it like it was some kind of victory in the article on their website! :| It's especially sad as I very much enjoy the BBC coverage, and we no longer have Sky Sports at home. :(

Even though my parents have sky. We will be refusing to get sky sports for just F1.

Well i will just get the results on the net in the future and how the current season is going not sure if i will even bother doing that next year.

The BBC seem to be of the opinion that a deal now means coverage 'til 2018 and not losing everything in 2013.

It's a load of rubish.

Bernie Eclestone says its great its happened. Something to do with making it better for us? Ummm duh, your going to get LESS viewers. Hows about you stop thinking about your bank balance for once and think about the millions of F1 fans that from now on will be missing out.

So Bernie thinks its great. Didn't a couple of months ago he say something about him fighting to stop it from going to sky?

And so there we are then. This will be the last year I'll be watching F1 because of the money grabbers that run the show. Better make the most of it.

It's just stupid.

With the amount of ads sky like to show you'll be lucky to see any motor racing!

Sky Program Ad, Another Sky ad, charity ad (sponsored by sky), 4 normal adverts -- then repeat!

Bernie (and the teams) was against it going to pay-per-view, subscription TV is entirely different in his little world:roll:

Lessons learnt from when ITV had the contract
There will be no adverts during live transmissions, however Sky will continue to show adverts as normal during repeats and highlights

Equally, I can see Sky bending these rules and having adverts up to the red lights prior to the race and as soon as the first car has crossed the chequered flag at the end of the race

Where the hell was FOTA on this decision? I hope the man responsible for this is birched to within an inch of his life. I'm disgusted and appalled <(

It's an absolutely ridiculous decision. I'm appalled that now if I want to continue watching F1 uninterrupted, I've now got to fork out, if I decide to do, £22.50 for Sky Sports package, £29.50 for Sky Sports HD package. :(

Indeed. Possibly the most annoying factor of it all comes in a comment from the BBC Head of F1. And I quote.

And while our coverage from 2012 may not be as extensive as it has been up to now, the bare facts are that the BBC needs to save money.

So, the BBC has to save money yet uses it as an excuse in explanation to licencepayers who will now have to fork out a fortune should they want to follow a sport they love. We need to save money as well.

Why not simply axe BBC3? There's never anything on.

Perhaps because they think they would look silly if they had 1, 2 and 4, but no 3.

BBC production quality has gone downhill in the last few years, especially with the news. I keep noticing loss of sound, loss of picture, wrong film played and all sorts of other things. Newsreaders keep on mispronouncing names and getting the wrong camera as well. Is that an effect of cuts?
