Is Bristol to Durham permitted via Didcot?

Hi all.

I am travelling to Bristol Temple Meads from Durham on the 9th of August returning the 14th of August.

I am hoping to set off from Didcot Parkway and was wondering would my return ticket allow this or am better setting off from Bristol ? I was wonderingh on the best route to take. I also hold a adult DIS pass if that help on the cost of the fare.

There is no permitted route from Bristol - Durham via Didcot unless you use the via LOndon ticket.

Athough Taunton - Durham tickets are valid via Bristol & Didcot to oxford & Birmingham

Hi all.

I am travlling today from Durham to Bristol Temple Meads. Then travelling back from Didcot to Durham on Sunday.

A Durham to Bath Spa off peak return is valid via Bristol and also via Didcot, Oxford & Birmingham. Cost £123.40.
Stop short at Bristol on outward journey. Start late at Didcot on return and travel via Oxford & Birmingham.
Fare quoted without any railcard discount.

This is correct.

There is no need to faff around excessing your ticket or buying different tickets, a Durham-Bath Spa return routed "Not London" is valid via Didcot (maps MW+ER). Break of journey (and thus starting/stopping short) is permitted on all Durham-Bath return tickets (not Advance tickets, obviously).

Sorry if I caused confusion.

Hi all. So if I get a return off peak ticket today from Durham to Bristol Temple Meads but change at Birmingham New Street, I can use the return part of the ticket starting rom Didcot either changing at Oxford or Birmingham or both if need be ?

As mentioned above, Durham - Bristol is not permitted via Oxford. However, bizarrely, Durham - Bath is permitted via Oxford.

This only came to light an hour ago when collybs discovered this anomaly. As a result, the previous advice to either get excess fares or split tickets can be ignored and I have deleted posts that may cause confusion. Please ignore my earlier advice.

A Durham-Bath ticket will suffice, this allows a journey Durham-Birmingham-Bristol-Bath (outward) and Bath-Didcot-Birmingham-Durham (return). You will be finishing short at Bristol and starting short at Didcot.

No problem :) There is no advantage to buying online, an Off Peak Return to Bath can be bought at the station. In theory if you do buy online you have to allow 2 hours before it can be collected at a TVM (however in reality I have heard reports of tickets being ready much earlier than this).

You won't be able to seats for both legs online, as you won't be able to specify a journey out one way and back another. You should be able to do it if you buy at a station though, or if you're only concerned for a reservation in one direction.

IIRC reservations generally need to be issued 2 hours before the train departs its origin station. CrossCountry now have a trial of an "instant" reservations system, where you can reserve a seat only 10 minutes before departure , which could be useful to you.
