Yes. I'm a Cimarronist, and this is our Holy Grail.

You could tell them that you belong to the Exclusive Bretheren. They won't have anything to do with computers. I know of a firm run by them in Altrincham that had all the spellcheckers and draft memory removed from the typewriters that were delivered to them with these facilities.

I have to say that Facebook has been useful to me when trying to get cricket teams out as it's another way to contact people. alos it was quite good when used to organise who was going on a trip. All I do is play Scrabble against friends otherwise.

They are not urban myths, go and do some research as Ralph suggests. If you love Facebook that's fine. That is right. I find it useful, but in small amounts.

Start another thread if you want to talk about binge drinking. It's a hugely complex issue.

you don't need to do any research to have a modicum of common sense and not post anything private on facebook. you're told not to give out your bank details over the internet so why would you post private information on an unsecure site like facebook?

If you don't want to research the problems with Facebook, that's up to you. The fact remains that what you caleld urban myths are anything but. A lot of information can be found out about someone through what they put on Facebook. It's not just bank details.

so? every website has privacy and security issues. what makes facebook different?
Their policy of privacy being opt-out not opt-in. They work on the basis that by signing up you want to share your details with the world. That sucks in the less computer-savvy to disclose things that could easily be used against them by Bad People.

I am sure that the Indian cricket team would have loved to take your comment in the most literal sense of the word, when playing in the recent Test series against England as a method that their bowlers found it hard to do.....but I know that you did not mean it in that respect. It is just how I read it at first :D

Seriously speaking, it takes me back years ago to the time when our village team would be suddenly down to eight available players for work-committment reasons with only a day to spare, then the telephone would be well used trying to ring around for replacements.

Since I'm at uni I use facebook to chat to people for whom I don't have their mobile numbers. Nearly everyone at university these days seems to use facebook, and if you don't it's seen as somewhat 'odd'. However, lots of events, parties and so forth are organised on facebook, and so it's good to use facebook just to keep up to date with what's going on in your social circles.

However, it does irritate me that some people seem to have about 1500 friends, most of whom they've probably only met once and probably won't see again. After all, it's impossible to have 1500 friends; according to one study, the average person can only cope with about 150 friends. So, to avoid having too many friends, I usually don't add people unless I've met them a few times, or occasionally, if I'm *ahem* interested in that person.

Another irritating aspect of Facebook is that a few people (mostly girls) seem to upload too many photos of trivial things, and then tag all their mates, or upload about 100 photos of a night out in town. In many instances, the number of photos of you on facebook seems to be an indicator of your popularity.

Finally, when posting on other's 'walls', basic indicators of privacy seem to go out of the window. On many occasions I've read accounts of people's lives falling apart on Facebook, which should definitely be kept private.

It is good for organising things etc. but I get random people who add me just because I go to their school, even though I've never even heard of them! Also a lot of girls are just too vain and add several pictures pretty much every day. What also annoys me is when they say "I'm ugly" or "I'm so fat" (when they're not) just to get compliments and attention. <(

Facebook is also quite good for limited blogging to your friends and family. I'm currently sat in the airport in Hong Kong and rather than sending expensive texts saying "HAI GUYS IM SAFE ITS GRATE HERE LOL" (not a realistic representation of my texting) I can sling a few journey photos up, tell those who want to know that we are well and how everythings going, easily and for free.

Thanks for that. This was something that I thought might have occurred...but not in so many countries.

I DO hope you weren't taking my reply seriously !:o [ Surely the smileys were a giveaway ? ]

"Seventy Nine" is the answer I give to any question where the answer could be a number. [ It's a private joke between me and my girlfriend, about one of her neighbours. ]

Similarly whenever there is any (preferably rhetorical) question where the answer could be a place (e.g. "where do you think you're going ?") I always answer "Ventspils" !

You'll catch on soon ...

Use the privacy settings to ensure you have control over who sees your stuff.

I have them maxed out! You still never know though. I have a couple of people as friends who post under alias names on these forums and whom I don't know in real life (but I know their real ID). You just never know! Although I do tend to keep Facebook to just my very best friends and the two lovely people who post on here

Facebook: people who know who i am, couldn't give a stuff about locomotives and frequently catch me unawares in the chat. Usually with nowt to say.

RailUKForums: people who don't know who I am, love locomotives, and are wealth of essential information. Clear winner. ;)

Would never bother with Facebook. In my opinion it causes more harm than good. RailUK is a good source of discussion, help and information, obvious choice in my view.
