It's a pity there isn't (yet?) a walk/cycleway wedged in the side of Upholland tunnel, which would make the walk between Orrell and Upholland station avoid the overgrown farmers path above.

Could be an idea to single the line upto Orrell for this purpose but this will breach into the can of worms that is Merseyrail electrification schemes which has been discussed before on this forum.

Another one for the book which could be walked at the beginning of this year is Stackstead Tunnel near Waterfoot on the old L&Y line from Rawtenstall to Bacup. However I have heard it is getting unsafe so may now be shut.

A collapsed wall between the canal towpath and the site of the old Granville Station in Birmingham allowed me to cycle through the tunnel under Gas Street basin to the site of the former Birmingham Central Sidings a few years ago.

I think there are a couple of ways to get down to it, though it's not one I've done yet. I've always fancied going down there but it appeared to be pretty wet last time I looked...

I've done that one both ways on my own at night, whilst checking something for work. Its a bit creepy in there all on your own, with just the sound of running water.
I did the liverpool indepedants at crewe whilst trains were running when i was younger, never again,it has a brook running through somewhere and all we had was a lighter it was spooky, when i came out at rail house a class 47 appeared about 30 secs after, phew!!
