Nice Job with the weathering!

Theres quite a few good picture sites out there which i use a base for some of the stuff me & a friend of mine have weatherd (Including our own pictures - Which, come the end of this month, i will get around to creating my own detailed site!) including Martyn Reads Smugmug site:

http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/

Heres a few of our weathering efforts - only photographed these three of my 153s so far, will phot some of my wagons later including the work done to our CDAs (Which Hornby incorrectly weatherd brown:roll:) and my efforts on my 2 Hornby Shark Brake vans...

The Wessex Trains Great Scenic Railways of Devon & Cornwall has had its interior seats, doors and cab painted - and very slight scratching of the paint along the windows to represent daily tree/vegitation bashing.

The ex Northern 153 is now sat in primer as it's due to become Wessex Trains 153329 - The St Ives Bay Belle - hence the Wessex Trains refurbished painted interior.

And the ex First North Western 153 in the background has been weatherd and re-numberd into FGWs 153361 - The Ex FNW, Northern & ATW 153 Which arrived into FGWs fleet back in 2007.

As for the paint we use - mostly Railmatch Frame Dirt (2402) / Railmatch Sleeper Grime (2406)

:)

There used to be a book around, think it was called the Art of Weathering. Showed how to make wagosn even more realistic, such as where the load has bent and shaped the metal body (think the person who wrote the book used a low-temperature soldering iron to carefully melt the plastic to make a more realistic look).

That book is still around, it is by Martyn Welch and I have it. Most people who are into weathering use that book for reference as it is so good.

However, i find that it is geared up for steam really, (even though it has a modern image section).

I remember seeing something where someone had used a 100W lightbulb to distress a POA (IIRC).

Sounds interesting - To weather one of my POAs, Ive taken a chiesel and wire cutters to some of the corners to give it the bashed about look, filed both wheelsets down slightly to give it the traditional wheelflat, weatherd it with Railmatch paints...and slight scratch marks with Instant Rust - Brilliant product and availible from just up the road for me!

Some pics to come soon, and 37798 - again, some fine weathering there!

There is some seriously good work on show here guys. As my last layout I had was back when I was about 15, I have never really been into the detailing side of things, but I am planning to do a lot more now I have got round to starting a new layout, 17 years later!

I think actual train weathering is a step to far yet, but I would love to get the actual scenery on the layout looking realistic. There are so many good products out there right now to.

Thanks chaps, I really appreciate your kind words.

Currently my compressor has decided to end its working life, so I have just weighed in for a nice new Iwata compressor and airbrush.

i will see if I have some other photos I can post ;)

There certainly is! The current level of weathering offerd by Dapol is excellent - On the pretty hard to get hold of Silver Bullets for example, And the latest level of weathering by Bachmann is getting rather good too! Id just wish those in Hornby could bother to stop weathering models such as CDA hoppers with the standard brown!

Some very realistic weathering in these photos. As a kettle fanatic I love the WD. I hope my efforts on my Bachmann versions can come somewhere close to that standard, then I will be very happy.

One thing that I notice from most WD photos is they often had a multitude of whitish streaks running down the side of the boiler such as can be seen in this photo,

http://www.flickr.com/photos/16749798@N08/5898861290/

Has anyone found a realistic way of reproducing this effect in 00, and might they suggest the mix of colours needed? I suspect plain white would look too stark on a model.

My only thought so far is to drag a cocktail stick down the boiler a number of times, but getting a tiny drop of paint to smear in a realistic manner, instead of just becoming a small blob, is what concerns me.

Looking good - probably would look even better if you could tone down the yellow sections a tad to take the sheen off.

Nice work, well done.
I'm looking to get set up with an airbrush next year, looking forward to trying out some weathering starting with some older models!!
