Hi,
I've booked a return ticket London to Manchester, but now need to go to Birmingham instead of Manchester on the return leg.

I've booked an off peak return (within a month)

Will I be able to use the London to Manchester ticket on a train to Birmingham or a station close to Birmingham? or will i need to buy a new ticket?

Any advice would be appreciated,
thanks

You can use any direct service to Birmingham (and some non-direct routes, if it's part of a permitted route for london-manchester) on the return. You're also allowed to resume your journey any time within the ticket's validity (1 month) to continue to Manchester (again, any of the direct trains would be valid, and some others).

So OP can break his journey at Birmingham and then resume it onto Manchester within the tickets original one month validity?

Thanks for all your advice, it was great, I told the train staff and they said no problem, its the route so I could break the journey at any point along it, all sorted!
