Don't know how many people have an interest in photos of non-rail subjects but thought this was the place to find out! In the last year or so I have taken more and more non-rail photos and it's something I enjoy as much as, if not more, than rail stuff. My HS10 was quite restrictive for such work and I'm now days away from actually being in possession of my new Canon 60D and associated clobber.

I've decided I want to share some of my work, see link below, and will add more and more as I get used to my new baby :)

I'd love to hear what people have to say!

Cheers :) Just had a look at some of your work and there is some pretty impressive stuff there!!

I'm glad you like the HS10 stuff, it does feel a bit limiting now but I'm hoping I can build on what I've learnt with it when the 60D gets here...could be as early as next Tuesday <D

I'm looking forward to being able to use Bulb, instead of a maximum of 30"

http://www.flickr.com/photos/69859934@N07/ : Today's update with most of the HS10 stuff I'm actually willing to share. Sorry that there aren't full captions regarding settings. Please let me know what you think :D

Had a day out in Northumberland today, partly to see 1Z47 with the 50s and partly to take advantage of the stunning scenery. Collection of the 60D is confirmed for Tuesday so this will be my last trip with the HS10 if all goes to plan....it has served me well and whilst I wasn't happy with my 50 shot (dodgy composition) I felt that the camera did me proud with the few non-rail shots I'm uploading.

There's a bit of a range from water crowns and reflections to a particularly vivid sunset! There's even a bit of wildlife in the form of a heron :o

Look forward to people's comments :)
Enjoy!

"Non-rail photos"??!!

Does not compute! ;)

Seriously, nice photos. I recently found a load of old non-rail photos I took in the 1990s, including some nice shots of Olympians, Nationals and Tigers in and around York in Rider York (remember that?) colours. This includes the Olympian done up in the old York Corporation tram livery in the mid-90s, and the National repainted into the York-West Yorkshire deep red colour.

Thanks both for your kind comments!! I am taking more and more interest in the non-rail aspect, in some ways it demands more skills and more adaptability. I AM getting the 60D tomorrow so expect some updates soon, I'm keen to develop my skills, particularly in portraiture :)

Sunsets (unintentionally), are becoming a bit of a running joke with my mates!!

Here's one of my first shots (to be published on my site) from the 60D after I picked it up yesterday. I am happy with the effect but the lighting needs tweaking to avoid glare from what I can see....

Comments please :)

Exif info gives details of settings.

Yep ta, its an aperture issue, I should have gone for my gut and bumped it up!! I shall know for future attempts :D

Today I've been attempting shots of an apple hitting a bowl of water, the lighting wasn't ideal in my bodged 'studio' but for a first attempt, second day with the camera, the effect worked. Better lighting and an apple that wasn't reflecting so much green light and I might get somewhere with it....

Some nice shots there. I like the water shots, the reflections and the fireworks. Good camera choice as well, are you shooting in RAW?

Not shooting RAW at the moment, no, I keep thinking to do it and every time I have picked up the camera I haven't changed it!!
Glad you like the shots - more soon I hope

No it's not really!
The image is a tad underexposed so closing the aperture would have only made that worse.

the best way of avoiding lens flare is to adjust your position, so if you had taken a step to the right (into the road I know) you probably would have avoided it.
I actually think the flare adds to it though, I like it.

Thanks for the advice, very helpful and I'm glad you like it!!
Interesting to hear what you say about liking the flare, I'd never considered that as it wasn't what I was aiming for :)

I will give it a go in a few weeks time if all goes to plan and see if I can improve!

Tomorrow I've got a job on covering a "Battle of the Bands" contest so there will be some shots of that as I am doing them for free in return for being allowed to use them myself as well. A type of photography I haven't done much of before....time will tell how it goes...
