Assuming the final stock movements on Christmas Eve involve putting it in the correct position for the start of service on the 27th, how many drivers work past midnight on Christmas Eve and how do they get home?
How many NR staff are required to work Christmas Day and Boxing Day on safety and security duties?
Hypothetically, I'd be quite happy to sit in an office on a station for 12 hours on Christmas Day keeping my eyes and ears open, and walking around the station every half hour for £100 net pay. Assuming there are staff actually performing this task, there must be substantial staff costs incurred on Christmas Day/Boxing Day despite the absence of any revenue earning service.

Generally speaking, staff who have to work where there is no service are expected to be able to get to work on their own (this doesn't just apply to Christmas).

I can't give out the numbers of staff present for a few reasons, the main one being I honestly don't know. It's not just for security though (I'm sure agency staff would work out cheaper for that), when I worked for Thameslink they had drivers at Bedford just incase the overheads got turned off for any reason (the drivers would be needed to shut the units down and apply the hand brakes or something like that). I don't think anyone works 12 hours on Christmas Day though. NR staff may be needed for engineering works, etc.

Quite simply if I ain't got a train service home then they pay alot of money for a taxi, last year they had to taxi me about 60 miles to my home, bill was in excess of £300 lol

Network Rail - have to man Signal Boxes where engineering work dictates & for security reasons. Controls are also manned.

TOC staff are also required to run engineering trains etc

Every location is different but at Worcester LM usually normal working day Xmas eve with last couple if turns finishing early hours at Worcs. Shed men will finish by 6am, then 2 drivers. Booking on at 6am,2pm,10pm as frost precaution to start units as req'd the same boxing day but 10pm act as full shed men to get units preped for start of play. Usually security men around station & depot as well both days.

The last time I worked Christmas Day, we had three shifts of seven on station (including a Duty Manager) and two in Control.
And yes, we had to make our own way in, one guy hired a car and then organised to give people lifts, at a rate a lot lot cheaper than a taxi!
Oh, and this year our Control and Manager will do twelve-hour shifts, as it's a Sunday.
