Collecting tickets bought online - reference number

I've been buying tickets online recently, and splitting my route to get the best price, and then collecting at a vending machine. When I buy online (with First Great Western) after I make my first selection I get the option to add another journey, but at the end I still end up with a separate reference number for each ticket. Therefore, when I go to collect them I have to put in separate reference numbers rather than one reference to cover all the tickets I bought in a block.

Is there any way around this. Do other train companies do things the same way?

This is the case with booking sites powered by thetrainline (like FGW and TPE). If you book with one of the ATOS powered sites such as East Coast or Redspottedhankey you will get one collection code for your whole booking.

Thanks for responses. I've not come across RSH before. Is that an independent website. Will they charge a fee for booking? Are the prices the same as National Rail?

There are no fees at Redspottedhanky. National Rail Enquiries doesn't sell tickets, but the prices are the same as through Toc websites, except where special offers apply (which are listed in one of the sticky threads at the top of this forum eg. East Coast 11% off).

No fees charged - unlike TheTrainline. The prices are the same on every website* (apart from any specific ticket deals e.g. East Coast give 11% off some of their Advance tickets when you buy it online)

*you may see different prices if looking on different sites for Advance tickets but let's leave it at that!

Quite peculiar as I used EC's website last week and got 3 different codes.

I've never had this. Provided the tickets have all been purchased in the same transaction, I've always been given a single code.

I've used EC a lot recently, to get the points, and when booking multiple tickets (first single advances) I get a single reference. What's even better, is that when I collect, I just stick in the card (Amex) and the tickets come straight out without the need for a reference. I think this is quite new as in the past a reference has always been needed.

That is new last time I colected an EC booking had to put card in and enter code in those damn glass things which are either over sensitive or need a sledgehammer to enter the data.:p

To be honest I thought it quite strange. You do get a reference number in the same way that you always did. I've been buying tickets almost daily in the last few weeks (have over 1300 points already) and each time the same.

One morning, I did have to enter the reference (using method described above) as I had two lots of tickets to collect. However, after entering the first, the second was just a 'pop in card and they're out' process.

BTW - as a tip, when booking with EC for the points, do seperate bookings for Advance and walk-ups. This way, you don't have to wait the two months for the points to show.

I purchased about £150 of 1st Advance but will have to wait until February for the points to become live because the booking included a peak single. As it is, it won't be a problem for me but it could have been.
